Book Description

March 27, 2012 Peculiar Crimes Unit Mysteries
Christopher Fowler’s acclaimed Peculiar Crimes Unit novels crackle with sly wit, lively suspense, and twists as chilling as London’s fog. Now the indomitable duo of Arthur Bryant and John May, along with the rest of their quirky team, return to solve a confounding case with dark ties to the British theater and a killer who may mean curtains for all involved.

For the crew of the New Strand Theatre, the play The Two Murderers seems less performance than prophecy when a cast party ends in the shocking death of the theater owner’s son. The crime scene is most unusual, even for Bryant and May. In a locked bedroom without any trace of fingerprints or blood, the only sign of disturbance is a gruesome life-size puppet of Mr. Punch laying on the floor. Everyone at the party is a suspect, including the corrupt producer, the rakish male lead, the dour set designer, and the assistant stage manager, who is the wild daughter of a prominent government official.

It’s this last fact that threatens the Peculiar Crimes Unit’s investigation, as the government’s Home Office, wary of the team’s eccentric methods, seeks to throw them off the case. But the nimble minds of Bryant and May are not so easily deterred. Delving into the history of the London theater and the disturbing origins of Punch and Judy, the detectives race to find the maniacal killer before he reaches his even deadlier final act.

Whip-smart and endlessly entertaining, The Memory of Blood is an ingeniously intricate mystery from the deliciously inventive Christopher Fowler.

One recurring event that always brings a genuine smile to my face is the arrival of a new Peculiar Crimes Unit (PCU) mystery by Christopher Fowler. The series has been a winner from its very beginning, up to and including THE MEMORY OF BLOOD, the ninth and latest volume.

The PCU is a law enforcement agency conceived and midwifed by England's Churchill administration during World War II. Based in London, it has evolved into a red-headed stepchild, as far as the government is concerned, particularly since it is uncommonly good at solving impossible crimes. The senior detectives of the PCU have been with the agency almost since its inception. Arthur Byrant, in spite of himself, is quirky, eccentric and brilliant. John May is steady and grounded. As unlikely a pair as one might find on either side of reality, the two detectives are polar opposites and steady friends.

THE MEMORY OF BLOOD begins and ends with the same party, but all is not festivals and fun under the surface. At a somewhat different party, one being held for the cast of a new play on its opening night, a particularly shocking and heinous killing takes place. One of the more interesting elements is that there is a unique twist on the classic "locked room" scenario, used here to great effect. But the theme of the initial murder and the subsequent ones that take place center on the "Mr. Punch" mythos, a character who has been part of the British low theater for over three-and-a-half centuries. It turns out that Mr. Punch has endured for far longer than a number of the characters. People fall victim to the unseen killer, who leaves a puppet associated with the enduring figure at the scene of each crime. Bryant has a pretty good idea of who the culprit is early on, but knowing and proving it are two different things.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't get enough of Arthur Bryant April 2, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another wonderful book by Christopher Fowler. I laugh, I sit on the edge of my seat, I shake my head, I want to slap somebody, and I am in suspense all the way through. If I could wave a magic wand over Mr. Fowler's head, I would make him write a new book every week. I just can't get enough of Bryant and Mays.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Death will repay all debts." April 8, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Christopher Fowler indulges in his unique brand of merriment and mayhem in "The Memory of Blood." As fans of the popular Bryant & May series know, the Peculiar Crimes Unit was established to handle high profile and politically sensitive cases. The members of the PCU tend to use unconventional methods to solve challenging crimes.

The mainstays of the unit are the two senior detectives--the irascible, unkempt, and unpredictable Arthur Bryant, and his friend and long-time partner, the dapper, organized and pragmatic John May. Bryant, May, and the rest of their loyal and hard-working team struggle to catch a clever perpetrator who is targeting individuals close to Robert Kramer, an ambitious and arrogant property developer and theater owner. A less compelling subplot deals with someone's desperate efforts to quash parts of Bryant's memoirs.

Arthur immerses us in the history of macabre stage productions in London that were modeled after the famous French Grand Guignol, "a vaudeville of horror." The author has a great time putting his colorful cast through its paces. Among the suspects are a hunky and amoral leading man, his married lover, an aging actor and actress whose best days are behind them, a sharp-tongued critic, a crooked accountant, and a fledgling writer. As the bodies pile up, the pressure increases to find the culprit before he or she strikes again.

Although the conclusion is not completely convincing, readers will enjoy the amusing and occasionally poignant interaction between the characters; the imaginative and suspenseful story that beautifully evokes Victorian London; and the insight into the destructive power of passion, jealousy, and greed. As always, it is a great pleasure to spend time in Fowler's quirky and seriocomic world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bryant and May take a curtain call! May 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Christopher Fowler's ninth episode in his acclaimed Peculiar Crimes Unit novels manages, quite well, to keep his reputation (and the series) intact. In "The Memory of Blood," Fowler's detective duo of Arthur Bryant and John May unravel another mystery (a series of, yes, murders) in grand fashion.

As readers of the previous books know, the Peculiar Crimes Unit (PCU) is a specially set up organization to handle the more "sensitive" cases, usually pertaining to high-level politicians, royals, the wealthy, or high-profile celebrities--too hot for the usual teams of Scotland Yard to handle.

In "The Memory of Blood," we find the duo once again involved with scenes from "the theatre crowd" whereby a new theatre, the New Strand, is staging "The Two Murderers." Alas and alike, art imitates life, it seems. During a cast party reception at the home of the theatre owner Robert Kramer, Kramer's baby is found, tossed out of his bedroom window, six floors below. Very dead. Lying on the floor is a life-sized puppet, Mr. Punch (of Punch and Judy). Horrific as it is, Bryant and May have a job to do. Catch the murderer. But there are a plethora of questions abounding already, not to mention a whole host of suspects: everyone at the cast party.

Clearly, of course, Fowler is in charge of his story and after a while, the case is solved. It's not so much that the case is solved in this book (or in this series) but how it is solved. Bryant is well beyond his sell by date, aging and, certainly, a bit eccentric, not only in his methods of crime fighting, but in his personal behavior as well. Rude, crude, and often simply mystifying, Bryant nevertheless is a brilliant detective. His modus operandi is offset by the more stable, logical, and level-headed May. And what a team they make.
