Format: Audio CD
The talents of singer stylist Barb Jungr are well established on her many fine CDs and that is why one wonder why this particular new CD is only sporadically available. For this listener this is one of her most sophisticated and genteel collections. Named THE MEN I LOVE, this is Jungr's selection of American songs by a varied group of composers and poets and she serves them very well.

The songs contained here should be mentioned:
Once in a Lifetime (David Byrne/Brian Eno)
I'm a Believer (Neil Diamond)
Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache (Sandy Linzer/Denny Randell)
Night Comes On (Leonard Cohen)
Can't Get Used to Losing You/Red Red Wine (Doc Promus/Neil Diamond)
The River (Bruce Springsteen)
I Saw The Light (Todd Rundgren)
This Old Heart of Mine/Love Hurts (Holland-Dozier-Holland/ B&F Bryant)
Everything I Own David Gates)
You Aint's Going Nowhere (Bob Dylan)
My Little Town (Paul Simon)
Wichita Lineman (Jimmy Webb)

That is a heady lineup of ballads and Jungr gives each its own personality as an homage to the men who wrote them. Her voice has rarely sounded fresher or more involved in the lyrics. She is supported by the excellent musicianship of Simon Wallace, Steve Watts, Frank Schaefer, Clive Bell and Paul Clarvis (Simon Wallace co-produced and arranged this collection with Jungr). Look for this CD to come round again - it is worth the wait. Grady Harp, February 10

The first contact I had with the music of Barb Jungr was a CD given to me by a friend, in which she delivered astonishing performance, really on just about every song, but most particularly, "Blind Willie McTell" and "Who Do You Love." Then I saw her live at NYC's Metropolitan Room, where she gave the most mesmerizing cabaret act I'd ever seen, a tribute show dedicated to the songs of Bob Dylan (the studio album of that show's songs is worth seeking out). Seldom have I ever been as transfixed by a singer in my whole life. This woman has guts, chops and flavor, and that combination of qualities is what makes a "good singer" graduate to "great." This collection is the one I recommend most to anyone who wants to sample Barb Jungr's range of styles. There isn't a thing this woman can't sing. Take, for instance, the daring to begin her album with "Once In a Lifetime," The Monkeys' "I'm A Believer," and a medley of "Can't Get Used to Losing You" & "Red Red Wine," and not only do them all with distinction, but in a way that makes the listener hear new things and unexpected pleasures in old, familiar songs. The next highlight comes with Leonard Cohen's "Night Comes On." Here's a great song at last sung by an equally great singer (no offense to the composer's own singing) -- it easily rivals the fine recording by Judy Collins. After a sweet interpretation of "I Saw the Light" (not the gospel song), comes the sublime "Everything I Own," in an emotional reading equal to those of Joe Stampley and even better than Boy George. Then there's a spirited, musically original, syncopated rendition of Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere," a reminder that Dylan is one of Jungr's specialties.Read more ›

Barb Jungr is, simply put, one of the very best cabaret singers in the world, and this may well be her best album. Every song throbs with intensity and intelligence. Treat yourself to it.
