About the Author

Madame Genevieve Antoine Dariaux spent most of her life in Paris, and now lives in the south of France. Even as a child she preferred to accompany her mother to the dressmaker's rather than go to the movies. Her talent for design and making costume jewelry led her to open her own fashion house, and her success eventually took her to Nina Ricci, where she was the directrice for many years.

as the others said, save your money. This one I picked up in a bargain bin at my local bookstore, and I can see why.

I was interested in it, because I really liked A Guide to Elegance, her previous book.

This is all the stuff the editor wouldn't let her put in the first book. It does very much have the feel of something thrown together, thoughts that never made it into the first book.

It is a collection of outmoded attitudes that thankfully don't belong in this new century, nor even in the one just past. They come from a dark age for women when a woman's only real financial option was to hang onto a philandering spouse for the sake of the money.

It includes gems on how to deal with a cranky controlling and borderline abusive man-- let your daughter plead your case for you since she can likely wind him round her little finger. Why on earth would a sane mother do that to her precious daughter.

One thing she does say in the middle of all that, is that if a man hits you, you call your lawyer immediately. Oh unless you deserved it, in which case you can now call things even, or make a little headway thru guilt tripping him.

The other book was a treasure and I plan to keep it. This is trash and will be going out with a nice load of wet kitchen garbage.

I don't even want to sell it to my second hand bookstore for credit or take it back to my bookstore for fear that some vulnerable and silly young woman reads it and takes some of the advice to heart.

This is up there with some of the nasty woman to woman stuff that perpetuates the whole abuse climate-- how to handle a nasty man instead of affirming other women in their obligation to dump such a one immediately.

This little volume was obviously written on the heels of the much better "Elegance", a book I found both helpful and fascinating. This one seems much more haphazard in its subject matter and, as another reviewer has so accurately stated, treats adultery as if it's something merely annoying or even amusing that every woman must simply ignore. There was nothing I liked about it, and I actually threw the book away.

One other comment: the paper this was printed on was flimsy and looked like newsprint. I expect hardcover books to be printed on decent paper since I'm paying so much for them.

On the whole, quite disappointing.

After reading "Elegance", I decided I must read the second book by the same author. It is organized on the same principle: short chapters, may be just a paragraph on certain topics.
The book is a pleasant, quick read and provides some good, if sometimes dated advice. It offers a very european, a very french point of view, which predictably annoyed some of the american readers. The bad reviews are not a surprise, but I do think, that the book does not deserve them.
I give only 4 stars, because some of the advice is dated.

This is really nice old-fashioned advice. If we all followed this advice, everyone would be a lot more polite, better looking & charming. It's fun to read.
