Cons: Alright, let's get my one complaint out of the way--the title. First of all, I don't see what's special about 27 days, it seems very arbitrary and frankly makes this book seem like a quick crash diet. Actually, it's the opposite--it's a very sensible change in when, how, and what you eat that you use for the rest of your life. You will lose weight in 27 days, but by all means you will continue to lose weight beyond those 27 days too. Also, I know MH loves to give into "sculpted abs" hyperbole, but promising that (especially in 27 days) seems silly. The average guy reading this book is probably 40 pounds overweight, so let's just worry about weight loss for the first 27 days, alright. However, I won't knock a star off of my review because what the book offers inside more than deserves five stars.
Food: This book will teach what is good to eat, when the best times are to eat, and how to eat (portion control, things like that). However, it is not an over-the-top calorie-counting system like other programs. When you first start out, you will need to read the calorie counts of the things you eat so that you have a general idea of what you are intaking, but you won't find yourself entering spreadsheet data every time you eat an apple or worrying how many points are in your bagel.Read more ›
It will show you how to change what you eat, not how much you eat, and lose weight and feel better.
It will show you what types of food to include in your diet and how they help you, and what foods to avoid and why they harm you.
It will show you how to gauge your current fitness level so you can follow the program and then re-test to see how you're doing.
It will show you some a simple workout program that will help you get on the road to being lean, muscular, and strong.
It will give you some good supplement advice on what inexpensive dietary supplements you can take to significantly improve your performance and health.
A few chapters were kind of "meh," such as the Magyver's Fridge one, the sex chapter, and the recipes. But there was plenty of helpful information throughout to offset this.
If you want to get a good education on the fundamentals of getting shredded, then I recommend this book. It fell a bit short in terms of workout programs and calculating an actual diet (it says you don't have to, but this will only work to a point). If you want to know how to work out and eat for maximum muscle gains and fat loss, then I recommend Bigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body (The Lean Muscle Series)--ESPECIALLY if you're new to training or short on time.
p.s. Below please find some of my favorite Hot Tips and passages for your reference.
#20. While doing crunches, touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. It will force you to relax your neck, relieving strain.
#23. Want bigger arms? Stop concentrating on our biceps. Triceps - the muscles on the back of your upper arm - make up 70 percent of your upper arm musculature. Focus on these to fill out your sleeves.
#29. Dieters who slept 8.5 hours a night lost more body fat. Dieters who slept 5.5 hours a night lost more muscle.
#36. When you are in a middle of a run or bike ride, and you feel like hanging it up, take a deep breath and blow out hard. This mind clearing technique is known as the "explosive exhale." It allows you to "blow out all your demons".
#46. When you're counting repetitions, start with your target number and count backward - you'll be thinking how few you have left instead of how many you've done.
#55. People could complete 10 additional reps when they listened to their favorite music while exercising
Joe Navarro, former FBI agent and author, says you can detect deceptions by looking for any of the following signs: she crinkles her nose; purses her lips; clears her throat; idly touches the front of her neck; rubs her eyes; raises her shoulders. All can be "tells" that what she's telling you isn't true. Pg217
Make love like a CAT. CAT stands for coital alignment technique, and while it sounds like something you need a chiropractor for, it's really simple and perhaps the best sex secret a man can own.Read more ›
