Editorial Reviews

Review

It is the only book I recommend. My buddy Tony Gregg (The 2013 One Drop Champion) told me I should read The Mental Game of Poker on audio book, I downloaded it in the middle of June 2012 and listened to it every night over the course of the WSOP. I couldn't endorse it more, I've done interviews where people ask me what book I would recommend and that is the only book I would recommend. I couldn't agree with the philosophy of the book more. ~2012 WSOP Main Event Champion Greg Merson --The Mental Game of Poker Podcast

My mental game is tough, and I ll tell you why. My mental game used to be terrible, I used to tilt, I used to go insane, and this is going to be a plug for Jared Tendler, he wrote a book called The Mental Game of Poker and I don t tilt any more. ~Justin Oliver, 2013 WSOP bracelet winner (Immediately after winning the $2,500 Four Max event.) --Pokernews.com

The best poker book ever written, and it's not even close. ~Lex Veldhuis, PokerStars Team Pro --Twitter

A complete treatise on the correct way to think for every aspect of the game.

Rather than just being a book you can read and know everything, this gives you the tools to work by yourself on yourself to be able to continually improve including aspects such as motivation to learn.

In short, now that I have it, I want no one else to get it too.

I worked with Jared over 2 years ago. I've been playing the game for a long time, but never really excelled at it. I was a winner, but I had major, major tilt problems. I mean... I had sessions where I would sit and lose 40 buyins in a straight 12-24 hr session. It was so stressful and emotionally draining for me because poker was my dream and I didn't want to keep working a crappy desk job. I was really putting myself through hell.

Out of desperation, I tried everything, read numerous books, posts, and all kinds of self-help stuff, but never really made any progress with my tilting issues.

In my looking for things to try, I stumbled across Jared's coaching services. I read his reviews, and liked the things he was talking about so I got on his wait list. This was it for me, if he couldn't help me, I was quiting poker.

Well... I didn't quit poker. In fact since I worked with him, I haven't had a real job in 2 years. Sessions with him were amazing. I've been a big fan of his material ever since.

When his book was available for pre-order, I would be surprised if I wasn't the first one to order the book. Needless to say, I was expecting a lot.. but I didn't expect to get a lot from EVERY single page. I mean, when I first got it I would randomly open a page and would be able to relate to the topic on a deep level.

This book is extremely important for my poker career.

Literally, every page has something I can relate to and need to improve on. How many poker books can you say that about? Most of the time I buy a book, I pick up one or two plays, or one or two different ways to view things or it just reinforces what you already know and we still say it was worth buying.

The Mental Game of Poker is the best book I've read to help treat tilt and other mental game problems at their core. It may be the best poker book I've read, period! It's funny because Jared is not even a poker player. He was a successful amateur golfer who would choke in big tournaments. He worked on his own mental game to improve his play, become an All-American golfer and win 9 tournaments in college. He then went on to get a Master's degree in counseling and became a licensed therapist. He's been using his skills as a mental game coach helping hundreds of golfers, and now hundreds of poker players. His first poker client was Dusty "Leatherass" Schmidt, who was one of the biggest winners in online poker at the time.

This is not a read it once and become tilt-free book. In order to get the most out of the book, you must do the writing assignments. They take time and conscious effort. I purchased this book 2 years ago and continue to use it to this day. It has taken my game to another level. I can't sing enough praises for this book!

this book covers so many positive aspects of the game that do not have to do with the actual playing of poker...these mental aspects I feel[after having played poker at high levels and many major tournaments for over 20 yrs] are much more important or at least as important then the playing of the game..if you cant master these mental aspects you will not sustain winning.....one of the best poker books ever written[and I have read them all....great read and the author has done a fantastic job....

Jared Tendler's The Mental Game of Poker is the definite guide book on the psychological aspect of poker because of second reasons. First, the book gave a solid definition for tilt and more importantly, Jared described what you can do to deal with the problem. He spend the majority of the book describing the seven types of tilts in chapter five. This chapter alone is well worth the cost. For example, I struggle with what Tendler described as the most difficult form of tilt-the Desperation Tilt. He describe that the root of the problem may innate, as having a gambling addiction. However, the book give suggestion on what I should do to combat the problem such as writing the signs, observe the different stages, inject logic, etc.

The second reason why this book is a definite work on psychological aspect of poker is the theories the book define in the Chapter 2. His three theories—The Adult Learning Model, Inchworm, and The Process Model—comprehensively describe my frustration in trying to get better. The models provide a different way to view getting “better”. The Process Model also provide suggestion on what I can do to get better.

All in all, I believe that this book is a great addition to your current poker knowledge library. The information in these book are truly invaluable.

Already showing positive results and I'm only a few chapters in! I'm a day trader and this book addresses the issues that traders and poker players have in common.
