Most Helpful Customer Reviews

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Robert Spender on November 17, 2008
Format: Paperback
Brown has written a great little commentary on Numbers, the fourth book of the Pentateuch. The author combines exegetical insight with practical challenges and applications. His exposition is lighter on textual exegesis and heavier on the theological implications of the text, but this is a commentary on The Message of Numbers. Brown's penchant for an organized analysis (First, Secondly, Thirdly...) betrays a pastoral perspective but provides good summaries yet, at times, stretches the text. So, the objections of Aaron and Miriam leveled against Moses were ethnic, vocational and domestic (106-07), with the third being quite speculative.

In general Brown's work is a welcome addition to commentaries on this lesser known book of the Hebrew Bible. He covers key issues and themes of the book and provides good insight into its teaching as well as helpful applications along the way. His emphasis on community is refreshing. Unfortunately, less emphasis is given to rhetorical features and genre. I would recommend this book for any early learner of this book or one who wants a refreshing re-read of the insightful book of Numbers.
