This enchanting story of the value to be found in a nobody lacks some of the charm of the author's "Book Thief" but is just a quirky and much more closely related to this reader's world. The central character is a better person than he gives himself credit for, yet this story escapes the unreality of an Oprah book club 'accentuate the positive' volume and delves into an everyday world of ordinary folk with not much money and not many opportunities. For Australians it is particularly real.

Well, what a refreshing change to find an author that writes as well as Marcus Zusak. Anyone who has read The Book Thief will understand how gifted this writer is. This novel has a little something for everyone - humour, twists, great (although somewhat offbeat) characters, some interesting messages about human interaction and of course, a good old fashioned love story. This is a great example of the talent that currently lies in Australian writing ranks - would love to see a screen version of this story.

This book had me hooked from the first chapter or first playing card as it was. "Ed" is someone that a lot of us may relate to wether we want to or not and leaves you thinking. I would and have recommended this book to many people and they too have all really enjoyed it. Easy and a very enjoyable read. Buy it!!!! Oh and the three twists in the story are excellent and well thought of.
