Book Description

Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, and suffering her entire life with severe social anxiety disorder, the widow Mary McAllister spends almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, the media, an elderly priest with a guilty habit of pilfering spoons, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below.

Most longtime residents of Mill River consider the marble house and its occupant peculiar, though insignificant, fixtures. An arsonist, a covetous nurse, and the endearing village idiot are among the few who have ever seen Mary. Newcomers to Mill River--a police officer and his daughter and a new fourth grade teacher--are also curious about the reclusive old woman. But only Father Michael O'Brien knows Mary and the secret she keeps--one that, once revealed, will change all of their lives forever.

The Mill River Recluse is a story of triumph over tragedy, one that reminds us of the value of friendship and the ability of love to come from the most unexpected of places.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! I am a BELIEVER!!!! July 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Having been loaned a Kindle from a friend, I immediately went in search of books that were inexpensive. I stumbled on The Mill River Recluse and the reviews were what made me really want to read this book. Having never written a review before, when I completed this book I felt I HAD to write a review. I was so wonderfully surprised to the depth of characters, storylines and twists and turns along the way. I stayed up all night just to finish it!! I found myself chuckling at times and caught myself off guard with tears rolling down my face. You became part of Mill River and its community almost from the first page. I really didn't want the story to end.

If you have only one chance to read a good Kindle book - this is by far the one! I enjoyed it so much, that when I someday purchase my own Kindle, I will be adding (and most likely reading) this book again....one I DEFINATELY want to add to a 'forever' collection!

I will search out any further books by Darcie Chan in a heartbeat!! Well done!!! Enjoy this read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stateside Maeve Binchy May 27, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Maeve Binchy fans, pay attention: Darcie Chan is your stateside solution. Chan's portrait of small-town life in Vermont evokes the lovable, quirky characters of _Circle of Friends_ or _Tara Road_, but with a style and spirit all her own.

The reader settles into the ebb and flow of life in Chan's Mill River easily, even as the author toggles between past events and the present. While Chan moves the story along skillfully, the greatest strength of _The Mill River Recluse_ is its characters. Chan's local citizens (both past and present) are lovingly drawn and immediately recognizable. As the plot unfolds, you come to know and understand her heroes (villains, too) in a most natural way.

A feel-good story that never turns saccharine, _The Mill River Recluse_ will not disappoint. Indeed, as the last paragraphs close, the reader wants nothing more than just to spend a few more pages in Chan's Mill River.

5.0 out of 5 stars A RUTLAND, VERMONT REVIEW June 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As stated, I live in Rutland, Vt. only 3-4 miles from Mill River (in Clarendon, Vt.). Mrs. Chan was very good with her research of this area (as I understand she has never been here) -- the towns near Rutland, the Marble industry and even the people were spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. She has the knack of not losing the storyline and keeping her characters real. This was one of the best 99 cents I have spent and am looking forward to more of her work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly satisfying saccharine August 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Mill River recluse is a mildly satisfying saccharine story. The recluse suffers from agoraphobia because the world was too cruel. A childhood event causes her to suffer social anxiety. A trauma in her adulthood seals her fate. She lives completely out of the reach of society, yet manages to keep abreast of the daily lives of the townspeople in Mill River. She manages to make few selfless friends and tuck away a few secrets to divulge throughout the novel.
Instead of furthering the story and adding depth to the characters, the dialogue rings false. The characters stiltedly concur with the narration. To not spoil the ending I won't go into details but the lack of plausibility of many characters actions annoyed me. I think if this author spent a little more time rewriting that this book could have come farther. It succeeds on many levels although it is an amateur production. It succeeds in that it is a feel good story where friendship and free money make a town feel good. Even though this was a freshman work, It still has some satisfying qualities. I'll look for the author's sophomore release.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW.....amazing July 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
WOW...amazing read. I literally could not think of anything else until I finished the book, and was really sad when I saw that the author has not published anything else YET. Please hurry up and write something new...what an amazing first book.

As the other reviewers have said...a series of unfortunate events turn a shy girl into a recluse. Being housebound for the past 22 years due to a long term disease - I thought that the author did an amazing job of capturing the many aspects of what this is like. Her house overlooks the town and even though she does not meet the inhabitants she loves to hear about them. The book is part Mystery(why is she so scared of going out), part character study(it follows her life), there is a Romance, etc. There are so many elements to it...it is very difficult to pigeon-hole in any one category. Mostly it is tremendously moving. The characters are wonderful. I loved the town. It is so hard to describe this book...as there is so much to it. Touched me so much...I wish I could read more....I am so sad it is over.

This is one of those novels that is only available in Kindle format and only costs 99 cents. The price sure was good and it was worth a try. Set in Vermont, this is the story of a woman who, in the 1940's, was injured by her wealthy abusive husband. Through the years after that she lived alone in a huge marble house, doing anonymous good deeds for the community. Her only friend and companion is a Catholic priest who visits regularly. All the characters rang true and I especially liked the way she depicted the town.

The book is well written, the story pulled me in and I enjoyed reading about the people she describes so well. Occasionally though I think the author got a few of the minor characters mixed up but it was only because I got so much into the book that I noticed this at all.
