Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an impressively learned and detailed historical account of Locke's political theory....If one is seeking a thorough, judicious, and scholarly account of Locke's political theory, especially if one is interested in its relationship to other aspcets of his thought and the ideas of his contemporaries, then Harris's book has much to commend it....a serious and substantial contribution to Locke scholarship." Ethics

"This is the first study to explain convincingly and against a larger background of theological-philosophical coherenece Locke's changing position on church-state relations spanning the Two Tracts of 1660-62. the Essay on Toleration of 1667, A Defense of Nonconformity (1682) and ending with the classic Letter (Latin, 1685; English, 1689)." Journal of Church and State

"Harris's work is a substantial contribution to the literature regarding John Locke." Church History

"There is much of interest in Harris's argument." Journal of Modern History

"The thrust of Harris' superb scholarship is to find consistency and interrelatedness where some have emphasized inconsistencies and contradictions, and its main value is to illuminate the interplay of religion and politics in Locke's mind." Choice

Book Description

John Locke (1632-1704) is a central figure in the history of thought, whose vision spanned questions concerning Christian worship, ethics, political economy, medicine, the human understanding, revealed theology and education. By connecting these wider interests with his political thought, this volume offers an integrated study of the mind of John Locke.

Format: Paperback
Ian Harris has written a first-rate study of the early modern English philosopher John Locke. In so doing he has moved the argument beyond either the traditional bounds of epistemology or religion--though Locke was certainly influental in both areas. Instead Harris points out how tightly intertwined religion, epistemology, human nature, and politics was for Locke. I would recommend this book highly, if one wants to move outside the standard philsophical accounts of his thought. For those wanting to know a bit more about Locke than traditional readings, this is an outstanding effort. Setting Locke in context alone is worth, and Harris does a superb job, the purchase price of the book.
