The Mind Matters: Consciousness and choice in a quantum world, by David Hodgson, Clarendon Press, Oxford, UK, 1991, 496 ff

The author is an Australian High Court judge in New South Wales. He is here assessing rationally what science can tell us about consciousness, weighing up arguments as evidence as judge and jurors must do in the legal system, and just as Victor Zammit, another former Australian High Court Judge performs the same service with regard to continuing discarnate existence in his book and in his weekly report on the Internet.

Hodgson's book is a very erudite presentation and, for most of its 19 chapters, is accessible to anyone who appreciates logical philosophical reasoning - but, even here, this is not light bedtime reading. I can see chapters 9-15 dealing with quantum physics providing a real challenge to anyone without a degree in mathematics or physics, and preferably both! Nevertheless, there is enough readable and coherent argument in the rest of the book to provide a convincing case for a world-view that many others have followed up on in the subsequent decades. If you want a simpler and non-mathematical introduction to these ideas, I would suggest the books by Dean Radin, Charles T. Tart or Pfeiffer and Mack. One reason why this approach has become increasingly popular is that, perhaps for the first time, there is a real chance of healing what many have regarded as the antagonism between science and religion, or at least between science and spirituality or mysticism.

The book explores how the physical material of the body, specifically the brain, can produce the non-material realm of consciousness, free will and our sense of identity and self that distinguish the human condition.
