This is a wonderful story about 'Slippery' Jim DiGriz, later to be known as The Stainless Steel Rat. We first see DiGriz and his two companions in this book when he beats a Casino Planet to win money so they can purchase weaponry to defend themselves against their home planet, the planet Pyrrus. This story is a wonderful short story showing how these three people work together but if you have a Kindle you would be better off spending slightly more and getting much more in the book "The Misplaced Battleship and Other Works by Harry Harrison"

First this story is in the public domain, which means there is no copyright. Many of these non-copyrighted stories where written for the SciFi pulps of the 50's like Astounding(no longer in existence ), they were short and intended to be serialized. This story gave rise to the satirical and humorous Stainless Steel Rat series beginning in 1961. It is a great story and well written , it does have that incomplete feel of an intended serial but it is still a good story and a fun read. Fortunately if you enjoy it there are several complete books that continue the story.

Why on earth has this been published? It's a couple of chapters from Harry Harrison's original "The Stainless Steel Rat" book (with the remainder of the book currently unavailable in digital form). I bought it as I recognized the text, thinking it might be The Stainless Steel Rat under another name. It is not. It doesn't even stand alone as a story.

The Stainless Steel Rat book would have rated 5 stars from me - a humorous SF classic. Being asked to pay for this excerpt? Outrageous!

Be warned. Save your money, wait for the whole book.

I've read some of the Stainless Steel Rat books before, and some of his other stories too. He's a great writer with a great sense of humor. This book, though very short, is a great free introduction to the Rat stories. For those of you who don't know the Stainless Steel Rat story, Jim DiGriz was a grifter, feeding on the society like a rat feeds on our own world. However, their world is so organized and "tight" that you have to be a stainless steel rat to survive. He's the ultimate improvisational thinker. He can plan, but he's best when things go wrong. Right at the beginning of the stories he is nabbed by a super secret government organization and coopted to work for the angels in the way of scoundrels. Kind of like Han Solo working for the Rebellion in Star Wars.

Try it. It's short and free and fun.

Well, since the story was only 42 pages I guess it doesn't really count this time around. This is the first Harry Harrison story I've read and I was not disappointed. I dont't know anything about the stainless steel rat, but the story was obviously written for a magazine, so it does have that unfinished serialized feeling. That being said, I enjoyed this short story and would recommend it for the Harrison beginner.

I still remember picking up my first copy of the Adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat. I was a young lad, full of wonder, and that book opened a whole new world of gentleman criminals and professional chicanery. Now I've read the first "story", only slightly different from the version with which I'm familiar. Looks like it's time to go back through and do some rereading!

I love classic sci fi and especially Harry Harrison and am infinitely grateful that I have found a lot of his works on Amazon. This tale of a roguish agent on the hunt for the thief of a battleship was both nostalgic, smart and humorously tragic and yes a good morsel of sci fi.

This story was obviously expanded to to form the basis of the 'Stainless Steel Rat' - this short story is identical to chapter four of the full book. By itself it is entertaining but if you have read the 'Stainless Steel Rat' there is no need to read this short story.
