5.0 out of 5 stars a must have for any vinyl collector, February 1, 2012

This review is from: Mistress (Vinyl)
shipping and buying experience was fulfilled by amazon. So I can't speak for other sellers.
The translucent yellow-goldish vinyl is sure to be a hit with any vinyl collector, but this vinyl hits deep in your veins if you're a Yellow Ostrich fan, the sound is spectacular, making you feel like you're there listening to them play it right in front of you. With tracks like "Mary" and "slow paddle" almost bringing me to tears. This vinyl is in great shape right out of the packaging only slightly warped, but still perfectly playable. The price is great, just a plain white insert but does come with a download coupon! A must have for any vinyl collector, these guys are going to get bigger and bigger with a new cd coming out soon and they'll be on tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars You're Gonna Hate Them Soon... But You Shouldn't, September 6, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Mistress (MP3 Music)
Yellow Ostrich-The Mistress is one of the most creative and addictive albums of 2011. Alex Schaaf's overlapping vocal loops sound like a futuristic hybrid of a chamber choir and a synthesizer. The group avoids Bobby McFerrin-esque novelty by combining those loops with inspired melodies and instrumentation, and avoid Medulla-esque impenetrability by, well, not being Bjork. The result is some truly adventurous music. The percussion on "Whale" out hip-hops nearly every conventional hip-hop beat produced this year. "Hate Me Soon" will dry the eyes of anyone mourning the demise of The White Stripes. But the more unique tracks are the ones that really stand out. "Libraries" manages to go from swinging to head-banging in a matter of minutes. The deceptively minimalist "Mary" features the most memorable and effective use of vocal-harmony-as-instrument on the album. This is music not only worth listening to repeatedly, but even rarer in the New Economy, worth purchasing.

Thanks to the DJs at KZSC Santa Cruz for introducing me to yet another great new artist. Get on board now before one of their songs gets put in a crummy commercial and the inevitable undeserved backlash begins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band with a deep dynamic sound, October 8, 2013
This review is from: Mistress (Vinyl)
I've seen this band live three times and their music just keeps getting better. They now have four full time band members and their music has its own original sound. If you're looking for a new music and enjoy textured sounds then give them a try. If you like them, you'll really like their newer stuff like Strange Lands and Ghost, plus they have a new album coming out in a few months. But don't just trust me, catch one of their shows and find out for yourself that they're a great band!

The thing that i like most about this album is how every song on it has the same depth of texture and lyric quality. I can listen to the whole thing without feeling bored or having songs feel out of place, just a really cohesive album. It comes with some good bonus songs as well, among which is an alternate version of "mary" which is one of my favorite songs. I would recommend this album to anyone who is intrigued.
