10 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Shalom Freedman HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWER on October 12, 2004
I love this book. I used to read it every Motzei Shabbat so as to begin my week with real learning. It takes each Mitzvah of the Torah and presents a variety of reasons for it, using as its sources the most recognized commentators in the Tradition. It does this Parasha by Parasha, and book by book of the Torah. Rabbi Chill writes clearly and he condenses the commentaries in such a way that a maximum is attained in a minimum of reading time. He often will present contradictory opinions and let them speak for themselves.

What is certain is that whoever reads this book will learn a lot of Torah.

This is a great book. It is an older book that is truly ageless by a classic guy. Practically a digest of Torah insights on biblical commandments, each of the 613 of them commented upon in the order of Parshas in the Torah books (i.e., Gen-Deu by weekly readings) but not as much the original work of Chill as comments from classic Torah commentators on the meaning of each commandment. The collection of commentators and sources make the book valuable to me and surely others. Maimonides, Nachminides, Sforno, Sefer HaHinnukh, Ibn Ezra, Ba`al HaTurim, Saadia Gaon, Rashi, Radak, Ralbag, Rashbam, Recanati, and more. Some of these are well-known while others less so. There is a glossary in the front and a useful intro.

The main format is 1)biblical quotation, 2) details of the commandment meaning (delineated and noted by Chill), 3) Commentary quoting classic sources (as mentioned earlier) and finally 4) references (as to where these comments originate). And the book also ends with an Index.

I have no decent libraries with Judaica or other resources conveniently located. I have a large library now after 30+ years on my "desert isle." This book is a favorite, and I found it accidentally at the Rochester, Mn library while at the Mayo Clinic where I assumed it to be out of print. I was very glad to find out that it was still in print and available. It's very much worth having, 500+ pages packed with classic knowledge on Torah sh'biktav /Tarya"g Mitsvot (/613 Commandments). Physically, my edition is "textbook" styled cover which is not fragile and will hopefully last for years.

It gives information that few Christians know. It explains how difficult it was to "keep the Law!" Thank God for the grace a Christian receives through Jesus, the Christ!
