Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you are looking for ways to become more self-reliant and produce many of your own goods, The Modern-Day Pioneer is a good resource and worth having in your library." - Examiner.com

"This book offers many options for anyone who wants to learn new skills or practice a more sustainable lifestyle. It's a great read and I am finding myself opening again and again to learn something new." --Mommy's Memorandum

"To me, pioneer living is synonymous with frugal living and that means savings in my bank account. And, who doesn't love that! This book is full of practical knowledge that is useful to New Englanders." --Sewing and Crafting with Sarah

"All of the crafting sections include recipes or step by step instructions to get you started.... If you have been wanting to incorporate more crafting into everyday needs, then is a great place to start. Even a city gal like myself could complete many of the instructions provided in the book." --Crafty Princess Diaries

"My personal favorite section right now is the bread making section. The Modern-Day Pioneer offers tips on how to do this without the cost of a bread machine. I think the next section I will be submerging myself in is the preserving section. I'm glad I have this guide book to go back to when the time rolls around. What an excellent gift idea!" --Go Graham Go!

"The book is written in such a way that you realize candlemaking and soapmaking are things you really can do! It brings a whole bunch of new skills into your grasp. When you've mastered one skill, you have the confidence and ability to tackle the next one. If you're into handmade, homemade, and simplified living, you can definitely take something away from this book. It will certainly stay on my bookshelf as a reference for many years!" --This Flourishing Life

"The book is packaged perfectly to mirror its sentiment [and] ... is anything but antiquated. It harnesses old methods for a modern time, allowing the more sophisticated sensibilities of today's culture to dip into whatever strikes their fancy, with straightforward tutorials not leaving you feeling you can't join in unless you go out and buy a plow and some Clydesdales." --Boulder Locavore

"Just shy of 300 pages with a complete index; this book delivers on its promise to teach about all of the Pioneer skills.... This is a great first step towards our next stage in life; and I am confident that it is one book that will come with us to the farm so I can refer back to it often." --The Big Binder

"Whether you want to go the whole hog and be as pioneer as possible, or just want to start slow by canning or baking a fresh loaf of bread, this book will help guide your endeavors. Each set of instructions gives you the rundown of what you'll need, and everything is detailed and well-explained." --Create & Decorate Magazine

A few of the topics covered in the book, I already knew a lot about: candle making, bee keeping, and soap making. The simple bread recipes and the information about bread making was reason enough to read this book! I have never had anyone I could learn bread making from. This book filled that void.

It is easy to read, well laid out, and broken into short segments. This is a book to keep as a reference tool.

It's more like a reference book than a read from cover to cover book. I am enjoying it. I pick it up from time to time and learn about different homesteading methods. It has a lot of great ideas.

This is a great book for any beginner. I had hoped it was more for someone that wasn't a novice, so I am giving this book to a dear friend who is just starting out on her quest of getting back to the basics and proving more for her family.

Good info--kind of simple instructions, however. Still looking for books with more detailed instructions including photos, but this gives nice overviews of projects.
