Editorial Reviews

Review

"Alison cuts through all the extraneous language to focus in on what really matters: concrete steps one can take to go paleo and make it work in a modern world full of tempting junk food, skeptical family members, picky children, life and work-related stress, holiday treats, household budgets, and poor sleep habits. The Modern, No-Nonsense Guide to Paleo is one of the best tools I've seen yet to get you started and keep you motivated throughout your paleo journey." --Mark Sisson, author of The Primal Blueprint and The Primal Connection

"The title says it all! This is a straightforward approach to the paleo concept that will help you look, feel and perform your best." --Robb Wolf, author of The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet

"Alison offers a unique and much-needed tool with The Modern, No-Nonsense Guide to Paleo. Having a template to help us live a paleo lifestyle in modern times is necessary as we navigate through our chaotic, stress-filled, and fast-paced world. At every corner turned, we are faced with food temptations, peer pressures, and uncertainties and despite our better intentions, it can be difficult to stay on track with the paleo plan. Fortunately, Alison puts it all in perspective and gives us the tools to stay focused on what matters most; our health!" --Sarah Fragoso, Everyday Paleo

5.0 out of 5 stars Increase your chance of success with this book! April 2, 2013
Format:Paperback
Finally a book about the HOW of Paleo, not the WHAT. I've been Paleo for four years now but never realized that I had adopted many of the principals Alison mentions in this book without knowing it -- if I hadn't, I wouldn't have been as successful as I have been. Lucky for you, Alison has taken the time to write everything down and explain things to increase your chance of success with the Paleo lifestyle.
After the first 30 days, then what? When the "glow" of a new diet or lifestyle wears off, you need some strategies in place to help you to continue along this path, because trust me -- it's not always easy. In this book, you will learn:

* The four keys to paleo success
* Why perfection is the `enemy of the good'
* How to create a paleo life that operates on autopilot and why it is important.
* Why willpower is a myth and what to do instead
* How to resist temptation and stay motivated
* How to shop, organize your kitchen and stay on budget
* Ways to live alongside non-paleo family and friends
* Hundreds of strategies for living paleo in a non-paleo world

Move away from recipe books that don't actually teach you anything except how to follow a recipe and learn how to LIVE a Paleo lifestyle that is right for you. Because if there's one thing we Paleo veterans have learned, it's that our lifestyle is completely individual to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just another diet book! April 1, 2013
Format:Paperback
I first came across the paleo diet when a friend of mine lost close to 60lb. I love to learn and having heard about her wonderful results, the pull to find out more was too much! I understood the why behind paleo but never got stuck into how to make it a part of my day to day life (largely because I am secretly addicted to bread and the thought of giving it up would terrify me!) I gave it up as another great idea that works for lots of other people but not for me.

I was given this book as a gift and it has been a total game changer for me. I've only just finished reading it so I've not implemented it all yet but with Alison's practical ideas and encouragement I can see that I will be putting much of this into practice. That's a first for me!

Even better, this book is jammed full of advice and implementation tips that can be used in other areas of diet, not just specifically paleo. Common sense. Encouragement. And actually getting stuff done. You can't ask for more than that! :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Paleo made easier... April 1, 2013
By Alan O
Format:Paperback
I've been following Alison's blog for a while and was pretty excited to hear up her upcoming book, The Modern No-Nonsense Guide to Paleo. I've been eating Paleo for the past fifteen months and have read most of the popular books on the subject. Do we really need another book? Yes! Alison's book is neither a nutrition book nor cookbook, but a nut-and bolts guide to living the Paleo lifestyle. It's a clear and easy go-to book on the subject. Alison skips all the science, leaving it to those who understand it better, and offers up great advice on how to get started, how to maintain the diet, and how to avoid all the other landmines. This is a book for those who already have already made up their minds about the Paleo diet. This wonderful book shows you how it's done.

I have read loads of books on primal/paleo eating and lifestyle. It makes total sense to me. When I eat this way, I feel amazing.....but then the wheels come off the bus. My elementary school aged kids revolt, I have deadlines at work, a parent dies, the whole thing is just overwhelming because you can't do everything perfectly. sigh.

The author does an excellent job of breaking down of all of the road blocks and gives you simple, straight forward ways to tackle almost any dilemma. School lunches-check. Eating out-check. Living with non paleo folks-check, check. This is not a book about just what to put in your mouth, but how to get the right food in front of you in a way that is sustainable. She will also help you break it down into small chunks; if you choose to ease into the lifestyle rather than go all in at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proper Planning Prevents Poor Paleo Performance March 30, 2013
Format:Paperback
Want an amazing guide to implementing the Paleo template in a non-paleo friendly world? Well you've found it! Alison provides excellent strategies and perfect plans to ensure your paleo success. She provides check lists at the end of each section so that you can quickly recall your proper paleo to-do list. I think my fave section is the "Handling a Crisis" section because we ALL know what it feels like to fall off of the wagon. This chapter handles falling with finesse and with a great check list to boot.

All in all, this is a wonderful book for anyone living the paleo/primal lifestyle be they new or seasoned.

"In our fast-paced, over-scheduled, and espresso-buzzed society, Alison's book, "The Modern, No-Nonsense Guide to Paleo" takes us back to when diet and daily activities weren't so complicated. As a busy mom concerned with what the school cafeteria serves up, the Hacking Bag Lunches chapter offers a concrete and doable checklist for mains, sides and desserts. When you consider all the time and effort that goes into grocery shopping, planning what you're going to eat, where and with whom, Alison's paleo guide and its checklists and notes sections offers a no-fail solution to cut the hassle out of the tempting, carb-laden unhealthy eating choices out there." ~Linda Esposito, LCSW

More About the Author

I am a paleo, clutter-averse writer, blogger, life coach, T-Tapper, Brit, California resident, apparently conventional mom of twin boys who is, in fact, a superhero. :-)

I have been examining the connection between food and behavior for years now after noticing how ingestion of certain foods would change my then-6-year-old's personality dramatically. As I worked to recover him, I realized how foods affected me, too.

My family eat a paleo diet. However, foods that we need to eat for health are not those most prevalent in our society so on my blog, www.paleononpaleo.com, I write about living paleo in a non-paleo world about the challenges of being the one who eats "weird".

Outside of writing, I enjoy hanging out with my family, reading, and whatever home project I am currently invested in. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
