Book Description

May 1, 2005
Prepare to be inspired. This book shows novice and expert quilters alike new ways of planning, designing, and constructing contemporary quilts. The Modern Quilt Workshop takes you through every step of making a quilt, encouraging you and challenging you along the way. YouÆll learn basic principles of quilt design, as well as new technical skills that will make your quilts more beautiful, more durable, and more fun to make.

Never before published, these breathtaking patterns were created to help you learn specific design and technical skills. Want to learn how to piece circles flawlessly? Need to fine-tune your color choices? Confused about how to choose quilting patterns? Follow the step-by-step diagrams and youÆll be mastering new design concepts and innovative techniques with each new project.

Each of the 15 quilt projects shows the level of difficulty, lists the skills youÆll learn, and shows how each quilt might look in different color combinations.

  • Design tips in each chapter teach you what to look for in fabrics, or options for how to quilt the quilt.
  • Measurements and yardage requirements are provided for 4 sizes, from baby quilts to bed quilts.
  • Cutting templates, and tips for using them, are included.

A thorough section on quilt construction and assembly helps even the first-time quilter learn the basics of cutting, piecing, aligning seams, thread color selection, choosing batting, quilting, and binding. Beginning quilters will love the simple, yet sophisticated, patterns that can turn a pile of cotton fabric into a work of art. Advanced quilters will hone technical and design skills, as well as master new techniques, such as improvisational piecing and working with sophisticated color palettes.

Whether you wish to create a treasured family heirloom or a beautiful gift for a friend, these unique patterns will inspire you to try something new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, original, MODERN! May 11, 2005
Format:Paperback
If you think quilting is for fuddy-duddys, get hold of this book and change your mind! This book has by far the best layout and design of any quilt book I've seen (and I own hundreds).

The quilts look complicated but they really aren't - and if you're nervous, start with one of the "easy" ones at the front of the book. Each quilt pattern is given in multiple sizes (Wall through to Queen) with a beautiful photo and clear illustrations and text, as well as clear cutting intructions and a table which makes it easy to see how many pieces to cut.

The authors encourage you to experiment, and show how each quilt could look in other colour choices. There's even hints on catching any potential design disasters before they happen.

This is my new favourite quilt book and I would recommend it for ANYONE - even advanced quilters will find new and challenging design opportunities sparked by this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book! :) August 2, 2005
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this book along with "Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt And Patchwork Patterns" and well honestly I got this book just for the free shipping. I can not believe it, I loved this book WAY more then the Denyse book (which I gave 2 stars).

The Modern Quilt Workship is just a wealth of information. Great quilting tips, and just really neat projects with great instructions. I started quilting in december, taught myself, having never used a sewing machine before. I am very paticular and like very clear insutrctions. This book is GREAT, with totally ultra hip patterns to boot :) I learned stuff just skimming this book when it first arrived.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond beautiful July 8, 2005
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the most amazing quilting book. The patterns are beautiful and don't have that country look like most of the others. The directions are very clear and there are suggestions for changes in the designs as well as helpful information on what types of materials work best. I highly rec this book.
