He is becoming a book worm like me!

I'm glad my 9th grade English teacher asked us to read this story, so many years ago... it was a great choice.

It's a very entertaining and poignant concept, but the real genius of this story is the build up.

The Monkey's Paw is the original story where if you actually get three wishes, then you might actually get what you wish for, but it could turn out much worse than what you bargained for.

It's a very entertaining and poignant concept, but the real genius of this story is the build up. It's not until half way through the story that the family makes their first wish. They wish for 200 pieces of gold, and they get that wish granted only a few minutes later, but the price for that gold is way too high.

And, the audio narration of this story by B. J. Harrison is absolutely incredible. He has a youthful, yet aged and foreboding voice, kind of like if Vincent Price had a bunch of professional voice coaches, instead of just practicing being creepy in his bathroom.

Pros:
+This is the classic tale of "be careful what you wish for." Everyone should add this to their library
+Very compact, tight short story
+Lots of suspense and build up
+The audio narrator is a genius!

Cons:
-Short, the audio was only a half hour, and the book isn't many pages.
-Old style drama/horror where there's not too much action, but more suspense

OK, most of us read this 40 years or so ago (if you're my age). Does it still have a message today? You bet! And will it still make you cringe and shudder as you're saying "No!!!?" Yep! So check it out. It's free on Kindle.

I love the story of the Monkey's Paw and have shared it with my daughter to remind her to be thankful for what we have. :)

I knew the basics of the story long, long before reading this. It has been made fun of and new similar stories created based off this one and I had always known their origins but had never read 'The Monkey's Paw' for myself. I had just been talking with my grandma a couple months earlier about it and decided to track it down and found it on Amazon for free. I knew it was a short story (and boy was it short) but it wasn't at all what I expected. I read it thinking it would have a touch of horror to it at least, even being an old short story. It ended far too suddenly too for my taste. I'm not disappointed that I took the time to read it... it was fun to have the chance to read either way, but I was expecting something a lot different than what it actually turned out to be.

Short and easy to read to kids on a car trip. And just as spooky as I remember! He should've thrown it in the fire...

I don't know if the paper version is bigger but the version I got was very short. The Monkey's Paw was disappointing and seemed to end abruptly. Unless there is more to this book I would not recommend it.

The monkeys paw is a classic heartbeat thriller that will make you feel as though your in the same room with this father and mother. The greatest suspense in this book only makes you hungry for a second part of this story. CLASSIC.
