THE MOODY BLUES

THEIR STORY

Regarded as one of the most innovative and successful rock bands in music history, The Moody Blues are musical leaders who can claim to have a following of mass proportions worldwide spanning the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. They continue to relate to new generations with every album release and tour, and have established themselves into the realms of eternal rock legend, influencing a thousand imitators.

With a phenomenal chart history of #1, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, Top 40, multi-Platinum, Platinum and Gold albums and singles, The Moody Blues are one of the few bands that have maintained their longevity with consistent success in the recording industry as well as on the road.

Originally a rhythm and blues act from Birmingham, England in the early 1960's with the hit song Go Now, The Moody Blues immediately transformed when Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined Ray Thomas, Mike Pinder and Graeme Edge in June 1966. What came out of this transition, was a completely new band with depth, beauty, and innovation, that has since become the legendary band that it is today.

Their groundbreaking debut album, DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, recorded as an experimental album for their record company to introduce the new concept of stereo recording, has gone on to becoming one of the most critically acclaimed and popular albums of all time. It is a true classic, and is considered the ultimate album for any music lover's record collection.

Featuring the worldwide hit, Tuesday Afternoon and one of the biggest selling singles in history, Nights In White Satin, the album became a milestone in rock recording, as it marked the first time a rock band fused its music with a symphony orchestra. It was one of the very first concept albums, and of course, one of the first albums recorded in stereo, which set the standard for many others to follow.

After the success of the first album, The Moody Blues expanded their musical canvases by exploring different types of sounds and compositions, branching out from their original "symphony" sound into psychedelic and straight ahead rock. The result was a string of hit albums and multiple hit records throughout the 70's, including IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD, ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM, TO OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN'S CHILDREN, A QUESTION OF BALANCE, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR and SEVENTH SOJOURN. From these albums, such mega hit recordings as Ride My See Saw, The Story In Your Eyes, Isn't Life Strange, Question, I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band), and many others, became staples on rock radio, and still are to this day.

With the incredible success of SEVENTH SOJOURN, the last of the first seven albums, The Moody Blues decided to take a hiatus. The intensity of the demands on their personal and professional lives as musicians were beginning to wear on the band, and the pressure from the industry as well as the fans, forced the band to take a break.

But The Moody Blues never really stopped. The break allowed the band members to focus on projects outside the group, as Justin Hayward and John Lodge collaborated as the Blue Jays in 1975, which became a Top 20 album; Graeme Edge made two solo albums with Adrian Gurvitz, Kick Off Your Muddy Boots and Paradise Ballroom; and Ray Thomas produced two solo albums, From Mighty Oaks and Hopes, Wishes and Dreams.

John Lodge also recorded Natural Avenue, and Justin Hayward recorded Songwriter and Nightflight, and worked with Jeff Wayne on the War Of The Worlds album, which produced the worldwide hit Forever Autumn.

During the hiatus, the record company released a live Moody Blues album to keep the fans satisfied in the interim entitled CAUGHT LIVE +5 and a greatest hits package, THIS IS THE MOODY BLUES. Judging by the sales of these two albums, it was no surprise that when the Moodies re-formed in 1978 to deliver the much anticipated OCTAVE, that the album shot to the top of the charts, garnering hit singles Steppin' In A Slide Zone and Driftwood.

In 1980, as punk rock, power pop and new wave were dominating the charts, The Moody Blues cut through straight to the top. With the release of LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER, The Moody Blues defied the critics and reached #1 on the Billboard 200. Their accompanying singles, Gemini Dream and The Voice, became instant hits and the U.S. tour was a complete sellout.

The Moody Blues then released THE PRESENT in 1983 with hit songs Blue World and Sitting At The Wheel, followed by another album that would thoroughly win over a new generation of young fans in the mid-late 80's entitled THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE.

Teaming up with former David Bowie producer Tony Visconti, The Moody Blues' THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE, brought their music into the hearts of a new generation. With the worldwide hit, Your Wildest Dreams, once again, teenagers were discovering the band, and claiming them as their own. The video of Your Wildest Dreams became a huge MTV hit and was named Billboard magazine's "Video Of The Year," aggregating one of the biggest singles of their career to date.

The next two albums continued their momentum with the hit single I Know You're Out There Somewhere from SUR LA MER, the counterpart to Your Wildest Dreams; and 1991's Say It With Love from KEYS OF THE KINGDOM.

At this point in the band's career, The Moody Blues had reached a milestone - their 25th anniversary of the release of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. With this concept in mind, The Moody Blues recorded a live performance for public television, a home video and album, that would create new excitement as a touring entity, helping establish them as one of the most successful touring bands of the 90's.

The special, entitled A NIGHT AT RED ROCKS, became the first time that the band had performed live with a symphony orchestra, recreating their DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED album on stage. The extravagant production, held at breathtaking Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado, featured The Moody Blues accompanied by an 88-piece symphony orchestra. Interestingly, the original music from DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED had to be re-written from scratch by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra's conductor Larry Baird, after the band discovered that the original compositions were not to be found. The response to this special commemoration was nothing short of phenomenal.

Promoters began asking for The Moody Blues to perform in their own cities, with their own orchestras, and the band went on the road with this new presentation, performing to sell out crowds, touring the world over, and even performing in South Africa for the first time.

Although touring for most of the 90's, The Moodies released their Gold-selling boxed set collection in 1994 entitled TIME TRAVELLER, and released a greatest hits package in 1997 entitled THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES and a 1998 double-cd ANTHOLOGY album.

During the midst of their hectic touring schedule, The Moody Blues went into the studio to record the new Universal Records album, STRANGE TIMES, which will be their first new album since 1991. Featuring 14 new compositions, the band recorded their 14th studio album in Genoa, Italy - being only the second time that The Moodies had recorded outside of the United Kingdom (the other album was OCTAVE). Yet another "first" for The Moody Blues, the band self-produced the album.

As the year 2000 approaches, fans can expect to enjoy music from The Moody Blues well into the next century. A band with such perseverance and love for music, is what makes this unique and talented group of musicians keep going. Their music is timeless and their talent can't be bottled. The Moody Blues, 35 years after they began, are here to stay.
