Book Description

Starting at age 13 when his father’s suicide spun his family into chaos, Donald Brown found himself swirling in a sea of uncertainty. He rebelled, was labeled a “loser,” dropped out of high school, and put a promising baseball career on hold to join the Marines. A freak accident put his plans out of reach so he settled for a factory job where an industrial accident smashed his knee and left him wheelchair-bound. When told he would never walk again, Brown considered suicide as he watched not one but two marriages fail.

But while on morphine for pain from surgery Brown had a dream: to graduate from Harvard Law School and walk across the USA. Everyone told him he was crazy but through sheer determination and much serendipity, Brown realized his dream.

This amazing story chronicles Brown’s journey, both physical and metaphorical, to recalibrate his life. From Boston to Big Sur, from the factory floor to the halls of the Ivy League, this book celebrates America and offers hope for anyone with a desire to make a change or a new beginning. The Morphine Dream will leave you cheering.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Inspiration March 9, 2013
Format:Paperback
I met Mr. Brown at a Book Club Getaway in Ct and am so glad I did. Everyone has some struggles in their lives - some more significant than others. Mr. Brown truly never seemed to be able to get a break. One thing after another continued to pile upon him until he had lost so much and could have wallowed in deep depression - it would have been understandable. But then a miraculous dream happened while he was on morphine for some injuries. He was told he would graduate from Harvard and walk across the country (he was wheel chair bound). Many people would wake up from a dream like that and either become more depressed at the realization it isn't a possibility or simply relish in the happiness of the dream that at least for a brief period of time they were able to overcome their obstacles. But not Mr. Brown. That dream was a sign and the rest of the story is so inspirational. He went from being a high school dropout to a Harvard Graduate AND he went from being wheelchair bound with no expectation of further recovery to walking across the country. I am not wheelchair bound and I can't say I would have had the same determination in similar circumstances. I am a firm believer in you can do whatever you want to do but those goals were so far from reality - yet he did them successfully and was able to write this book.

If you have any struggles and are looking for a truly inspirational book - this is it. I questioned the title when I first saw it but after speaking with Mr. Brown it was clear - no other title would do. The title held the key to his future. I give this book 5 stars - and again, recommend it highly to anyone who would benefit from a very inspirational story.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Don Brown overcame his handicaps and set goals for himself and achieved them. I have some handicaps from a stroke and thinking of his story helps me overcome them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of His Way March 24, 2014

The author has a remarkable story to tell, and he does it very well. It is a motivational message for young people who face trials and who may feel unlucky in life. A story about how community can create a fulcrum for the turning of a life story. A story about recognizing one's own natural gifts and abilities and being persistent in pursuit of the American Dream. But this was a young person with a lot of inherent promise -- very smart and very quick thinking, with an outgoing personality -- lots of moxie. These qualities appear to have contributed greatly to his ability to overcome difficulties. This is a story of a mind that might have been wasted and of the true grit that can make the most of what life serves up to us. In the end, each of us can only play the hand that we were dealt, but learning the rules and strategy of the game can help us to play better and more successfully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great informational read April 23, 2013

This was great timing because we are planning a driving trip out West that will cover most of the area Don walked. It is a story about determaination to push yourself to achiev a goal. Did get too deep into personal issues and conflicts but overall a very interesting and well written book. It was a break for me in that I tend to read mostly thrillers and mystery books.
