This is a nice collection of classical music, designed specifically for romantic moments but also enjoyable as background music for other occasions.
In general, I'm against cutting up classical music into little pieces and putting them out in various "best of" collections. But putting together playlists for romantic or entertainment purposes is an exception, and I do it pretty often myself. This collection gives me some more music to play on such occasions without having to rip more CDs, and includes some music I don't have elsewhere. Also some great recordings I don't have -- like a really nice Bachiana Brasiliera No. 5 by Villa-Lobos, from the Sao Paolo Orchestra, for example.
The quality of the recordings is good, what you'd expect from these X5 collections. In general not the most famous names or orchestras, but very competent and enjoyable performances.
Note that this is being marketed as "romantic" music, as in music for lovers. It is not necessarily "Romantic" in the musical sense. The Baroque (Bach, Vivaldi etc) and Classical periods (especially Mozart) are represented, and there is plenty of post-Romantic and operatic music.
I would definitely recommend that anyone who wants to plan a romantic evening around this music should give the tracks a listen first and make their own playlist. Some of the pieces might not be to everyone's taste, and could dampen rather than enhance the mood. But it certainly gives some good material for a nice night in.
This is a really nice bargain at the $2.99 Deal of the Day price on February 13, 2010. I'm sure it will be a fantastic collection for people who like occasional classical music but don't listen frequently. Not designed for the "serious" classical listener, but in the end not all classical listening has to be serious.

I recommend picking these collections up when you see them if you are interested, because Amazon doesn't carry them indefinitely. For example there was a previous collection of "99 Most Essential Pieces of the Romantic Era" that is no longer available. If you keep collecting them, the various concertos and symphonies will become complete, as Amazon seems to split the movements between different collections.
I'm a classical musician, but I guess I'm not hardcore, because these recordings are fine for me. Excellent background music, and a nice wide selection of composers.

Not sure what to make of this release. It was released originally on February 13, 2010 as a Valentine's Day promotional "Daily Deal". I paid $2.99 for that version, which can be found here. There are a few reviews on that page, including my original review at the time. The only apparent difference between the two versions of the set is that tracks 5 and 6 are reversed. This release of the set is now on sale for $1.99, which is a nice deal.
This set has the typical strengths and weaknesses found in many releases in the "99" series -- a lot of stray snippets and movements from larger works taken out of context. But also a lot of great music for a great value. And it's not all chopped up -- there are quite a few excellent shorter integral works, such as the Meditation from Jules Massenet's opera "Thaïs", Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a good "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin, and many others.
This is supposed to be a set of classics for lovers, but I'd suggest editing your own playlist out of this material rather than just putting the MP3 player on shuffle and romanticizing. Some of the music lends itself well to a romantic mood, but a lot of it does not. So take the marketing ploy here with a grain of salt.
This is 9.8 hours of music, with a total download size of 954 MB. Bitrates are variable and average between 184 and 245 kbps.
If you have been buying a lot of these "99" sets but somehow missed this one, you'll find a very high repeat rate - although I don't have any numbers this time since this came out quite a while ago.

Awesome download
Not a huge fan of the classics, but this one is awesome. Many familiar pieces and very relaxing music. I bought at $2.99 and well worth it. Enjoy!
