Product Description

Playing for Real: Stories from Rocky Mountain Rescueby Mark Scott-NashPagers go off all over Boulder and programmers, grad students, accountants-men and women from all walks of life-drop what they are doing, grab their rescue gear, and head for the hills. Someone is in deep trouble in the mountains and the members of Rocky Mountain Rescue are ready to save a life.Playing for Real describes what goes through a rescuer's head, from the excitement of the initial ring of the pager to searching for and finding victims. The rescuer will share with you the challenges of stabilizing and preparing a critically injured victim for evacuation-moving the victim to emergency vehicles (sometimes down hundreds of feet of rock wall), and often dealing with death in remote, difficult terrain.Playing for Real is an evocation of the mountain rescue experience, a history of one of the finest mountain rescue groups in the country, and a celebration of 60 years of saving lives in the backcountry. Royalties from the sale of the book go directly to support the continuing operation of Rocky Mountain Rescue.ISBN: 978-0-9760525-6-2Publisher: Colorado Mountain Club PressPublication date: 3/5/2007

5.0 out of 5 stars Well told story of community, service and heroism, April 8, 2007
By

The history of Rocky Mountain Rescue and the accounts of some of their modern day work are brought to life by the author, Mark Scott-Nash. Dismissing the idea that an all-volunteer organization is not 'professional' and delving into the triumphs and tragedies inherent in their work, Scott-Nash makes the events and emotions very easy to understand, even for us non-climbers. A terrific read for those who value community, the outdoors and everyday heroes.

The rescue stories were interesting and it sounds like the Rocky Nountain Rescue group certainly deserves all the accolades and credit that Scott-Nash gives it. However, Scott-Nash's writing is not particularly engaging and is a little sophmoric.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read for Coloradans, October 2, 2007
For those who live and play in the Colorado Front Range, this is a 4-star book since it's about places and events in the backyard. Not sure if it would be as interesting to those in other states however. Sometimes the writing comes across as too much self-congratulatory ra-ra, go-team-go. But the stories and history are interesting and RMRG truly is one of the best in the nation (which sadly isn't saying much).
