Book Description

Nineteen-eleven is the year our two beauties, Rebecca Walsh and Marta del Toro leave the comfort and safety of their boarding school back East, under the watchful eye of their grandmother Abuelita and Madame Boutin, headmistress of Stonefields School for Young Ladies. They’re headed to Smith College in the fall, to continue on the path of the blueblood debutante. But something is rotten in their beloved Mexico. The Revolution has started; Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa are on the move. Adulio, their faithful servant and overseer of the Del Toro ranch has come to fetch them. They are needed in Mexico.
Follow the girls on an adventure, a road to discovery where they will have to summon their courage and call upon their talents, their loyalty, their faith in each other to overcome the challenges facing them as they search for inner and outer peace, battling the old demons, greed, lust, vanity, self-doubt and a new one, likely the most difficult of them all, maturation into adulthood. The people of Mexico need them, need their help fighting the minions of a greedy oil company and the totalitarian thugs held over from the Díaz Regime, with the father of Yellow Journalism thrown in for good measure.
Read the story of these strong and intelligent young women as they respond to first love, romance, intrigue and betrayal. Will they defeat the dragon, or will it consume them, take them down and make them just one of the many victims in the sad and tragic life story that is Mexico?
Marta’s Quest is the final chapter in The Mule Tamer Trilogy, chronicling the exploits, trials and tribulations of this remarkable and heroic family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recomend this series! August 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
AGAIN John has wowed me!

There was one thing tho I hated about this book..... That was starting the last chapter! This ment that the ride was over for this series!

I've had the honor of being allowed to read all three books. They were wonderful, he is a great writer, I experienced humor, action, excitment, feelings, even love and every thing in between with these books.

I've watched (or read) the daughter grow and the charaters become stronger.

I got very attached to the charaters and hated to see the story end.

This last book was especially interesting with the history behind it. Marta is deffinatly Chica's daughter!

Thank you again for the books and I do hope you keep me posted on your next venture in writting, can't wait to see what you come up with next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good! July 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed this series of books and think Mr. Horst has done a remarkable job with research. The first two were riveting. Marta's Quest was very good, but I just felt it started slow. But given the age and upbringing of the two young women, I can't expect them to start out as wild as Chica. It still gets really good and stays that way thru most of the book. I will definitely watch for other books by this author. Especially if its a western. I think he has brought westerns back and with a whole new environment. This is a must read series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another terrific ride! July 22, 2012

I really enjoyed the first two books of the Mule Tamer trilogy, and enjoyed this final episode, Mule Tamer III, the most! Chica's daughters, Rebecca and Marta, have the choice to live as pampered and protected debutantes or jump into real lives full of danger, fun, love, betrayal, and revolution in Mexico. The two women face both smarmy and smooth criminals, outlaws, and perhaps even their true loves but who is who? The well-woven plot twists and turns while the suspense builds and builds. It kept me guessing until the very end. I don't want to give anything away, but Rebecca and Marta are definitely their mother's daughters! The history, writing style, humor, plots, and characters in John Horst's books are so refreshing. This book, like the first two, is a unique mix of western, historical, mystery, and romance with a cast of characters that yank you into their adventures from the very start and keep you with them until the end - LOVED IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series June 11, 2013

Enjoyed the whole series, and this was no exception. Learned more about how Marta became the women she was. Not sure the graphic description of violent acts was necessary...some was repetitive and seemed there for shock value rather than understanding the plot and characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read May 26, 2013

I will be the first to admit that I am not a "western/cowboy" type person, but since I know the author figured I would give it a try. Wow am I glad I did--these are action packed books, with his descriptions it is so easy to visualize these interesting characters, places and there are so many stories within the story that it is hard to put the book down. I truly enjoyed the trilogy and have just started "Maria's Trail". I always knew John loved the old west, did not know he is such a talented story teller. Hope he continues.

1.0 out of 5 stars Adventure Lost May 2, 2013

What a disappointment! Mule Tamer 1 & 2 were action packed and worthy to be labeled as westerns. This third effort was a poorly written romance novel not worth the money to buy or thetime to read. Total waste of time.

The title of these 3 books is very misleading. Hot Mexican Women Kick Some Serious Ads, would be more accurate. Nice strong female characters with a pretty good story line. Read more
