Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Harmonizing sexual energy is paramount for paramours. Taoists see men's sexual energy as fire, quick to ignite and extinguish (hence the post-coital grunt-and-roll phenomenon), while women's energy is water, slower to boil but longer lasting. Further, in this view a woman's sexual energy starts in her head and "trickles down" over her heart to her genitals, while a man's energy ignites in the genitals and flares up past his heart to his mind.

The early Taoists were physicians as well as sexologists, and their centuries-old teachings encourage sex not only for pleasure and intimacy, but for lifelong health, creativity, and longevity. Orgasm is something to cultivate and pursue weekly if not daily, although men learn to separate ejaculation from orgasm and often forgo the former. Coauthored by four longtime practitioners of Taoist sexuality, this book does what The Joy of Sex did for millions of readers: it shines a clear light into foggy areas of sex that have been shrouded, overly mystified, or misunderstood. The 50-odd drawings here, in fact, were created by the same illustrator. Thai author Mantak Chia has done an admirable job with his coauthors of making the mystifying concepts of sexual energy so vivid.

Taoist sexuality is, above all, rooted in nature and in the physical. The authors first teach basic exercises like belly breathing and PC-muscle toning (Kegels aren't just for women anymore), as well as pulling energy down from the head to the genitals, circulating sexual energy in the mind, and sharing life-giving energy with a partner. Taoist sex is all about energy flow. "Your genitals and spine are like a water wheel that draws the energy up your spine and then pours it into your head to replenish your brain. From there it flows down like a waterfall into your abdomen, where it can be stored in a life-giving reservoir of energy." The 28 exercises here all teach a deeper energetic sensitivity within oneself before cultivating the flow of sexual energy with a partner. This is an excellent distillation of Taoist sexuality, an antidote for Westerners living "in their heads," and an inspiration for those wanting to "sex the spirit" while they make love. --Rebecca Taylor --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening but lacking in detail to a degree December 26, 2001
Format:Hardcover
First off, I'm far from an expert on 'sacred sex,' which is why I picked up this book. I was particularily interested in channeling sexual energy, improving multiple orgasm, and developing the ability to be multi-orgasmic (as a man).

I should also note that I'm not generally a spiritual person; I don't regularily practice anything in particular. At the same time I am interested in and familiar with activities that involve a lot of body awareness, such as yoga, pilates, dance, martial arts, meditation, etc., as well as the Hindu and Buddhist faiths.

The book highlights the Universal Tao practice of sexuality, rather than Tantric-like practices, and does a good job of briefly explaining the importance and foundations of the religion to the topic at hand. At the same time, I often found myself wondering more about the Universal Tao in general, and how sexuality fits into a more comprehensive religious tradition. I felt an incomplete picture was presented: either discuss the religious aspects fully, or leave it out entirely. As it is, I feel I would have to explore Universal Tao in order to gain full value from this work.

The chapters concerning what you'd think the book would touch on most of all, multiple orgasm, were similarily vague: what is there is thorough and informative, but details and specific guidance are lacking. Even with some experience in spiritual practices and exercises, and having developed a fair bit of body and energy awareness through other activies, I found myself barely able to experience and follow what the authors were suggesting.

The book is also widely targeted, to both naive and experienced users. However, I feel the authors managed to reach neither group fully. The instruction and guidance I bought the book for (multi-orgasmic sex practices, something probably generally practiced by highly sexually aware couples) could be sparse. The information was there and complete, but seemed to assume some previous knowledge or experience that went unacknowledged. Then, the authors would explain very simple things you'd expect highly sexual couples to know, such as the function and location of the clitoris.

Most importantly, the main thrust of the book is connecting with your partner, not being multi-orgasmic. After chapter 3, the book focuses on sharing energy, developing love, and a number of other very positive and beneficial practices that I'm glad I read about. Certainly, the authors do readers a service in not just giving them techniques without explaining their power and application. At the same time, this broad overview on connection comes at the price of specifics, leaving the promise of the title unfulfilled.

On the whole, this is a decent work. It'll open your eyes to some new sexuality concepts, and I'm sure that with practice one would develop a fuller, more spiritual sexuality. At the same time, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with no experience in spiritual or body-based practices like yoga, meditation, pilates, tai chi, martial arts, etc.: one would have to develop some body awareness and control before being able to undertake some of the exercises with the minimal guidance provided.

More detail, more step-by-step, and exercises to get readers to that point would've made this an excellent resource. More information on multiple orgasm and how exactly to develop that ability to feel and channel energy are, to my mind, critical. As it is, the authors are off to a good start but suplementation is necessary.

One final point: the book does include a section on intercourse and thrusting. Although this is something a lot of couples can probably innovate in on their own, it is noteworthy in that this is one of the few sexuality resources I've ever seen that touches on the actual act of intercourse and the variety of possibilities there.

I believe the Greek reviewer clearly missed the purpose of the book and does a great disservice to the authors and the public by claiming it is a "wish list, and not a true guide." It is absolutely not "90% how in touch couples should be" and does clearly and simply give practical techniques and guidance. While the healing love practice that the authors present draws on the Taoist tradition and western sexology clearly dealing with how lovemaking can be a source of greater intimacy, healing, and spiritual relationship, they obviously were quite committed to providing clear and practical sex advice, as evidenced by its extensive coverage in the book. I'm a somewhat average male in most respects, although I would say I do live an alternative lifestyle. I do not have any specific previous "spiritual" or body awareness training. This book was astoundingly practical and allowed me to become a Multi-Orgasmic male in about two months of regular, although by no means particularly strenuous practice. It has revolutionized my experience of sexuality, and allowed me to leave genital focused orgasm and ejaculation goal orientation far behind, and take a quantum shift in intimacy and ecstatic pleasure for both my lover and I. She found it extremely quick (in a couple of days) and easy to learn how to not "crest over" and remain multi-orgasmic continuously without getting over-sensitized and not wanting to continue, as many women do after a full orgasm. This book can honestly change your life experience radically!!! ... I recommend a beginners mind here, and you will definitely be rewarded, even though there may not be an extensive amount of details in the book about the experiential progression of the practice, and even if, as the authors indicate, it may take up to six months of practice to get the hang of it. I just trusted my own experience as I went along and took what was valuable and understandable for me, and left the rest like water off a duck's back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sexual Kung Fu July 24, 2005
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In this book the authors discuss the concept of "sexual kung fu," which despite the humorous connotations in the West simply means sexual practice. My biggest issue with the book is that it really should establish that it is a Taoist guide at the outset that is as much about Eastern spirituality concepts as it is about sex. It isn't that I object to the book, it just isn't what I expected given the title and cover art.

Having said that, there are some good pointers, and I found the chapters on health and aging to be especially well written, although I must admit that I found several of the exercises recommended to be vague and not particularly helpful.

I think that there are better books on the subject available that are more geared to the target audience with a specific "how to" approach. If you have an interest in Eastern spiritual beliefs and want to apply them in your sex life, this is an excellent book. Many, though, will find the extensive Taoist philosophy tiresome. The book has some well written chapters and sections (chapters one, two, and eight are very well done); just be aware of what you are buying before you purchase the book.
