The CD release of "The Muppet Movie" soundtrack is truer to the film than the vinyl edition issued in 1979 by Atlantic Records (SD 16001). The CD has all eleven titles featured on the album, but with one notable difference. On the CD, "Never Before, Never Again" is the same version featured in the film - not so with the LP. I was somewhat surprised by this discrepancy, but it doesn't take away from my enjoyment of this CD. The CD booklet also includes lyrics to the songs - another departure from the vinyl edition. This makes an enjoyable album much more enjoyable.

With the re-release of the movie on DVD I would hope the CD somehow is re-released as this is enjoyable by kids and adults alike. I am disapponted I can't even get the original "Rainbow Connection" from this on MP3. I distinctly remember Paul Williams composed it. Great music, great cast, great movie.

In 1979, Kermit The Frog was nominated for an Oscar for his recording of Rainbow Connection from the delightful Muppet Movie. More accurately, it was the brilliant composers Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher who were nominated. If you haven't heard those names before, you may be missing out on some incredible music. It Goes like It Goes, from Norma Rae was the winner. While I am of the opinion that Jennifer Warnes can do no wrong, I was also one of the many people disappointed that Rainbow Connection was not the Oscar choice.

Never mind; time has been kind to this beautifully written and performed song. It has been remade numerous times and is still well loved after nearly 35 years.

I purchased this Soundtrack on vinyl immediately upon hearing Rainbow Connection and was delighted by the entire record which was witty, thought provoking, and irreverent, but wholesome; all at the same time. Although it was written by two mainstream legends, they wrote "outside the box" and managed to capture the awe of childhood without creating a childish record.

I loved Never Before, Never Again. This was Mrs Piggy's over-the-top, yet touching song about falling in love for the first time. I think it is actually quite pretty, even if it is Frank Oz impersonating a sow.

When Gonzo sings I'm Going to Go Back There Someday, you realize that this odd little critter is singing about something much deeper than we first assume. This is another poignant and sweet song.

I Hope That Something Better Comes Along is a funny summation of the battle of the sexes, which must have even more complex dynamics for a frog and a pig.

Moving Right Along is a buddy road song where Fozzie demonstrates his need for GPS in a montage of cross-country navigational errors.

Had this soundtrack (on cassette, no less) about 30 years ago, but it had long since disappeared. I have been hoping for years that I would stumble across this soundtrack somewhere, anywhere, and here it is! 'The Rainbow Connection' sounds just as wonderful, 'Never Before, Never Again' just as hilariously corny and off-key, and 'I'm Going to Go Back There Someday' still makes me a little misty-eyed. If you need a mood-lifter CD, this is it! Now if we could just get The Muppet Show on Instant Video....

I suspect the death of Jim Henson in 1990 as well as probable legal hassles prevented this(and lots of other Muppet audio delights)kept this out of the glory days of compact discs, when it seemed every week entire artists' catalogs came back on the market, complete with extra tracks and detailed notes.Record labels emptied out vaults of everything from Caruso to Robert Johnson and Raymond Scott(and if don't know who Scott was-there is a Henson connection-I'll wait while you google him)Imagine a Henson box set, just the audio stuff.!his album, originally on Atlantic,is now in Disney's vault and even there, its taken years for this diamond to come back to shine on a new audience.
While there are no audio extras, the package is sparkly(literally, though no poster nowadays)and has a nice rememberance by Paul Williams, who wrote all of this glorious music with Kenny Ascher(Kenny, take that most deserved bow). The Rainbow Connection is,of course, the centerpiece, adding to Kermit's canon alongside "Bein' Green".These are to Kermit what "My Way" and "New Yor,New York" were to Frank Sinatra's later career.Fanfares for the Common Frog. But don't overlook Gonzo's touching "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday".There is a Gonzo in my life,my second born, who has lived this song, and is doing good in the world,as Gonzo probably is(maybe retired today and playing with the Grandwhatevers with Carmilla by his side). And,of course that great Finale, where Ian-Freebairn Smith gets to show off his orchestral chops, ending with the quintessential review by the Swedish Chef:"The flim is okey-dokey".All flims, and their soundtracks, should be this okey dokey.
