Editorial Reviews

They're irreverent, irrepressible, and downright irresistible. They're the Muppets! -- starring in their first full-length movie. See how their meteoric rise to fame and fortune began: with a rainbow, a song . . . and a Frog. After a fateful meeting with a big-time talent agent, Kermit the Frog heads for Hollywood dreaming of showbiz. Along the way, Fozzie Bear, the Great Gonzo, and the dazzling Miss Piggy join him in hopes of becoming film stars too. But all bets are off when Kermit falls into the clutches of Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), a fast-food mogul seeking to promote his French-fried frog-leg franchise! Featuring Oscar(R)-nominated music (1980, Best Original Song "The Rainbow Connection," Best Original Score) and side-splitting appearances by some of the biggest names on the silver screen -- including Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Orson Welles, and more! –-this fully restored and remastered 50th Anniversary Edition of THE MUPPET MOVIE is a critically acclaimed comedy classic your family will treasure for all time. 5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star movie, 2 stars for shoddy treatment and extras November 28, 2005
Format:DVD
OK to clear up some confusion about the latest incarnation of "The Muppet Movie" this edition is celebrating the fact that Kermit always a bit green around the gills is 50 years old. That said I'm completely unimpressed with this edition of a classic family movie. I'll get to the reasons why in just a bit in the meantime here's a recap of the plot for those of you who have forgotten what its about.

Discovered by a big time agent (Dom DeLuise) playing his banjo among the reeds and lilly pads, Kermit (Jim Henson) moves to Hollywood for fame and fortune. Along the way he hooks up with Miss Piggy (Frank Oz), Fozzie Bear (Frank Oz) and other Muppets who are looking for their road to the big time. Kermit is pursued by Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) who wants to open a chain of fast food frog leg restaurants. He hopes to make Kermit his company mascot. Along the way Kermit and his friends meet a who's who of Hollywood's funniest comedians along the way. Featuring a who's who list of top notch celebrity talent including Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahnm Richard Pryor, Edgar Bergen, Steve Martin and others, "The Muppet Movie" provided the early template for family films that could also be adult friendly as well.

With bright vivid colors "The Muppet Movie" looks solid in this DVD transfer but the film could have used a bit of restoration. Image clarity and sharpness are not what they could have been as well with an occasional softness that surprised me. Granted, this edition looks better than the Tri-Star release of four years ago but the film really needs to be carefully restored improving the overall image and sound quality. The 5.

Let's clear up some confusion here....the "grasshopper" comment was on the movie soundtrack ONLY. It was NOT in the film. If you listen to the song "I hope that something better comes along" from the soundtrack recording, MOST of the dialog exchange between Rowlf and Kermit prior to the beginning of the song, is DIFFERENT than the movie (not just the "grasshopper" line). The different dialog on the soundtrack was to help make sense of the scene in which the song takes place, for those who hadn't seen the film.
I have an old VHS tape of The Muppet Movie from 1984, and the "grasshopper" line isn't on that either. Nothing was censored for the DVD.

I agree that the Muppets' 1979 TV special "The Muppets Go Hollywood" (which promoted the film's release), SHOULD have been included on this DVD. I'm deducting one star for that ridiculous omission.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creme de la Kermie. June 3, 2004
Format:VHS Tape
Mini review of one of my alltime 10 favorite films.
Many people question why this is on my top 10. I think the question is why is it not on theirs? This is pure entertainment for the whole family. It is a movie that works on all levels. The story is enchanting. The music is charming and whimsical. The muppetry is fantastic. It is hard to imagine a better opening to a movie than the rainbow connection sequence.
The movie is a cornucopia of awesome quotes. I think my favorite still remains: If frog's couldn't hop, I'd be gone with the Schwinn.
The cameo roles are excellent as well. Steve Martin excels as a put upon waiter. Dom Delouise is impressive as a hollywood agent adrift in a swamp and Mel Brooks steals the show as a german mad scientist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply one of Hollywood's best November 12, 2005
Format:DVD
First, to answer some questions from below. Due to an incorrect press release from Disney some people think there is no widescreen. The 50th anniversary release of The Muppet Movie will indeed be presented in full widescreen along with pan and scan full screen.

Also, Kermit the frog is indeed 50 years old. He first appeared in 1955 in a 5 minute puppet show for WRC-TV's Sam and Friends.

The Muppet Movie is simply one of the most original movies to come out of Hollywood in ages. There hasn't been anything like it since, not even subsequent Muppet movies. They've all tried but nothing else has been able to recapture that perfect blending of children's puppetry with dialogue and situations that can hold an adults attention throughout an entire movie. The cameos are numerous and, quite often, hilarious. One of the best is the inclusion of puppeteering pioneer Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. Genius!

This movie puts me in mind of some of Mel Broosks' best work. So it comes as no surprise that the Brooks cameo here is one of the funniest bits in the movie.

After 26 years The Muppet Movie holds up to its original comic standings. The jokes were old and funny then and they're older and funnier now. Do yourself and your children a favor and add The Muppet Movie to your collection permanently. You'll watch it 30 years from now and still enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A bear in his natural habitat....a Studebaker!" December 16, 1999
By M.M.
Format:VHS Tape
This is one of the first films that I ever remember seeing, and it is still one of my favorites today. This story about the Muppets' cross-country excursion to Hollywood is beautifully told through the wonderful vision of Jim Henson. It answers the question about how the Muppets first came together, and offers the audience a glimpse into the lives of the various eccentrics that made up 'The Muppet Show' before they became famous. My favorite is, of course, The Great Gonzo, the "prince of plungers." His out-of-this-world weirdness always adds more fun to the chaos of the situation, as Kermit and Co. try to outrun the evil Doc Hopper and make it to Hollywood on time to audition. I also love the big Studebaker that Kermit and Fozzie drive around in as they sing "Moving Right Along." All of the songs are memorable, from "Rainbow Connection" to Gonzo's "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday." I have seen this movie a million times and I will watch it a million more. It's just one of those films that you can never get tired of viewing.

Great movie - brings back memories of exam week in college. My only complaint is the video quality on a larger screen. Seems like they could have cleaned it up a bit better.

My children have made it well into their teens without seeing the original Muppet Movie. I have rectified the situation and enjoyed watching the Muppets with them.

Muppet movie ticket offer is false advertising
The promotional information clearly states that only one code will be given per customer so there is no implication that buying four DVDs will get you four codes. It stinks that it doesn't work this way, but I see nothing in this that I would consider false advertising.
