Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A TV musical variety puppet show that's been off the air for more than 25 years is an unlikely source for a comic book. Fortunately, Langridge is the perfect cartoonist for the job: his sense of humor draws so heavily on vaudeville, light verse and absurdist blackout sketches that it's as if the franchise were created specifically for him to play with. His timing is impeccable, and his visual style has exactly the right mix of dignified gravity and dizzy silliness. (As with the TV show, we almost always see the Muppets from the waist up only.) Each of the four episodes collected here has a little bit of a narrative through-line (an insurance investigator trying to find out exactly what kind of creature Gonzo is, for instance), but they're mostly an excuse for Langridge to fire off a fusillade of recurring routines (The Swedish Chef! Pigs in Space! Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker!) and single-page inventions, gracing nearly every panel with little bonus sight gags. Langridge's command of the Muppet characters is so deft and witty that this volume is as good as having more episodes of the show. (Oct.)

Review

"Written by Roger Langridge, another well known comic writer with an absurdist sense of humor, the Muppet Show returns to entertain a new generation. (...) Parents with a nostalgic bent and kids will love the gags and skits that fill this book. It's sure to be a hit with all ages." -- School Library Journal

"Mixes clever mysteries with a lead who's as much a mystery to readers as he is to those who do his bidding. This is first-rate crime fiction, brought to noirish life by artist Paul Azaceta... A-" -- AV Club, The Onion

"...impeccably well done."-- Fantagraphics Books

"...one of the most appropriate and fitting comic adaptations ever published." -- Comic Book Resources

"Langridge has knocked this one out of the park. Highly recommended." --Read About Comics

5.0 out of 5 stars a comic muppet show October 18, 2009
Format:Paperback
Just like the classic Muppet show, some of the gags and skits in this graphic novel works and some dont..its fun. Most of your muppet characters and show skits (like Pigs In Space) are here. You will enjoy thru these comic page having fun with each special Muppet we all know so well.

Some say this is a kid's graphic novel reprimting the four issues of the comoc--the bad news is adults will love this too. Dont expect hard messages or a continuing storyline. This is a comic version of the show done with love. Each issue is like an episode of the classic show without the guest star

Writer and artist Roger Langridge must know this show well. The art and the jokes are so much like the classic show, you may have to get the DVD The Muppet Show - Season One (Special Edition) to feed your muppet addictions when you finish this collection

If you loved this show, this book is excelent way to relive your Muppet craving and share it with your kids

Boom Kids is also releases Muppet Robin Hood. Anbother chance to enjoy the muppets...I want PIGS IN SPACE in their own book

5.0 out of 5 stars PIGS IN SPAAAAACE! March 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
The transition from TV show to comic book is awesome!! I've always loved watching the old episodes and this comic book makes me feel right at home. I mean dancing chickens!! How cool is that?! The coloring is great and the humor seems effortless. I especially enjoyed the last arc in this book and the story behind it Langridge provides. A great comic at a great price!! Definately looking forward to future issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff for the family May 29, 2010

I love this guy's stuff! The comic is a perfect continuation of the TV show. My wife and I are huge fans of The Muppet Show from way back, and now we have our son watching the old shows and reading the new comics. (He's only 8 months old, but he still thinks it's funny)

The energy and playfulness of the television show has translated over to comic books very well. Like the show, each comic has back stage drama going on while sketches are preformed. Many old favorites return like 'Pigs In Space' and 'Veterinarian's Hospital', as well as new ones.

This could have easily been a boring, franchise property, that spoke down to it's intended audience. But instead we get a playful comic that is fun for kids, and kids at heart. A big part of this is the writer and artist Roger Langridge. Langridge has been cartooning for over twenty years, and makes sure the characters are full of energy and leap off the page.
