Book Description

Soccer mom Yvette Palmer lives an ordinary life in San Antonio, Texas when a box is delivered to her by mistake, and in taking it to its rightful owner—a crotchety neighbor named Mona who shares her back fence—is drawn into a strange and haunting tale.

Mona’s ratty robe, mood swings, and secretive behavior all raise red flags, and Yvette is sure someone else is living there despite Mona’s claim to live alone, but Yvette is unable to break away as she listens to how Mona transformed from a young college woman about to be married to the odd, reclusive, ghost of a woman she is now.

As Yvette listens to her neighbor's tale, she discovers a shocking connection, but doesn't know whether Mona's come to help or to harm her and her family.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mystery Box--Great Read! October 30, 2012
I chose this book for our book club and was not expecting the twists and turns in this book. It was so well written and all of us enjoyed it very much. The main character, Yvette, is delivered a box that was intended for her strange neighbor. When Yvette goes to give her the box, it opens up a whole world that she didn't know existed. I didn't expect the kind of world it opened up, but it made it impossible to put down. I would recommend this book if you're looking for a fast, easy read. It kept me on my toes and we had a lot to discuss at book club meeting. Enjoy!

This book takes you through a fascinating story of what happens to a women who gets a box delivered to her by mistake. I was not able to put the book down! This book was also very powerful because I could so easily relate to the main character and her struggles with making her family happy while finding her own personal fulfillment. 5.0 out of 5 stars This kept me awake at night! February 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I made the mistake of starting to read this book immediately after downloading for free a few nights ago. I was immediately sucked in, and was horrified when I noticed I had been reading for several hours and it was well after midnight. If I hadn't looked at the clock, I would have sworn it had been only a half hour or so. Even though I made myself stop reading, it was well over an hour before the adrenaline left my body and my mind relaxed enough to sleep. This was a fantastic book that kept me on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down. I finished it in record time, only because a neglected everything else until I finished it. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

This is a fast-paced read with unique characters and plenty of twists and turns. Yvette is a woman we can all relate to. I was drawn into her dilemma, intrigued by conflict, and applauded her strength. I'd recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book lures you in February 12, 2014
By Bj Cox
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There was a TV show long ago where Ray Bradbury is sitting in his office full of all kinds of strange or common items and his eyes land on one and he weaves a story about it. The Mystery Box is just such a story. Yvette is busy with 3 kids, teaching classes and washing the same clothes and dishes every day. She loves her husband and children, but she feels strangely caged by the day to day grind. One day there is a water main break and in the chaos a UPS box is delivered with someone else name and her address. She calls UPS but they check and say it is the correct information. Not knowing what else to do, she opens the box and finds an infant's dress. Poehler lures us into the story of Mona who actually is the crabby neighbor who lives behind them. She takes the box to the house and becomes a victim of her own curiosity. As Mona's story unfolds a few hours every day both Yvette and the reader become aware of the cost of curiosity, what being caged really means and the meaning of safety. Throw in a mad scientist and the Taliban and you get a mystery wrapped in a riddle that you can't put down. It is an addicting sort of book you will think of long after you finish it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strangely addictive February 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As Mona's story unfolds and Yvette identifies the symptoms of Stockholm syndrome, I felt like I was suffering the same symptoms. I felt I was being sucked into the insanity of this story and yet I couldn't stop reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Love the Characters February 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yvette lives in a normal house in a normal neighborhood, with a husband, 3 kids and a dog. Her back-yard neighbor often phones to leave messages on her answering machine, griping about the noise from her kids, dog, life. So Yvette was most irked one day to get a UPS box intended for said griping neighbor. When she went to bring the box to the griping neighbor (Mona), Mona invited her inside to tell Yvette her life's story.

The book was well written, well edited and well formatted (which sometimes doesn't happen with discount Kindle books). However, I found Yvette to be too whiny about her life: it's hard being a den mother for both of her sons, she's always running around for the kids, blah, blah, blah. On top of that, she doesn't even sleep with her husband; she sleeps next to her daughter, claiming her husband snores. I just wanted to shake her and tell her to behave like a reasonable human being, and not sign up for more than she could handle. Then she didn't go on vacation with her husband and kids so she could continue to see Mona every day, and listen to more of Mona's story. Why? I also didn't care much for Mona. She made bad choices in her life, which were compounded by others. I figured out where the story was going almost halfway through, but I hate to quit on a book, so I finished it. There were a couple of minor things I didn't guess, but that's it.

When I started this book, I was upset by the fact that it was written in present tense (one of my pet peeves). However, after getting a ways into the book, I realized that this was deliberate on the author's part, a way of separating the current story from the one Mona was telling. So, between what I liked and what I didn't, this book averages out at a 3. That said, I would try another book from this author.

More About the Author

I write fiction for teens and adults and teach writing and literature at a university in San Antonio, where I live with my husband, three kids, and two dogs. I'm also an avid reader. I've always said I never want to give up reading for writing or vice versa. I want to do both. My favorite authors are J.K. Rowling, Tracy Chevalier, Ann Patchett, Suzanne Collins, Barbara Kingsolver, Cassandra Clare, and Stephanie Meyer. I have too many to name, but those are a handful of them.

I love to interact with readers and have recently added features to my website at with this in mind. If you email me your art and/or stories based on The Gatekeeper's Saga, or on Greek mythology in general, I will post them on my website for others to enjoy. You will also fins a short video on the Olympians and a fun Jeopardy Game to test your knowledge. If you enjoy quizzes, you can download a free app to test your knowledge of The Gatekeeper's Saga.

Thanks for taking the time to read about me and my writing!
