Book Description

September 18, 2011

‘Children climb piles of discarded furniture and chunks of collapsed building in the alley. Mud and ashen water streaked across their faces. One stands at the top, holding a broken table leg in place of a scepter, shouting that she is Queen of The Struggle. The others scramble towards her, hoping to steal her spot. My stomach clenches at the sound of her declaration, the pang of guilt like rusted metal on my tongue. They don’t yet understand that no amount of violence or coercion can replace complacency with the religious fervor sovereignty brings. Their hands are still pristine. The streetlamp flickering alternates their faces between playmate and ghoul.’

Rife with political and religious undertones, By the Nails of the Warpriest follows an unnamed thief who steals memories from the elderly—those who have a a vague memory of The City before The Struggle—and sells them to memory-junkies. He ekes out an existence by ruining the very souls he’d tried to save. As a fallen leader of The People, he’s almost thankful that his family is not alive to witness the depths to which he’s sunk.

Then he finds a memory that suggests they weren’t killed in a riot, that someone lied to him. That someone wants to keep him from his family.

4.0 out of 5 stars I want more! September 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
By the Nails of the Warpriest is set in a time when bottled memories are more sought-after than street drugs. Nik Korpon creates an epic dystopian landscape and moves the plot along with both action and pure poetry. The protagonist is a damaged soul, a memory thief who murders people in order to extract precious secrets. But you can't help but root for him as he tries to figure out the story behind his missing wife and son.

The backdrop Nik creates has endless potential, and I wanted more. A couple hundred pages could have truly brought the world to life. I closed the book only wishing it was longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tight, the way chokeholds are. April 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If you're one of those readers who love to read something original, something they have never read before, this is for you. This is such a well-balances crossover of genres, it has something to please. If you love well-written stories, this has depth, stunning images and a playfulness with vocabulary that is second to none. If you like dystopias, you will find this one suffocating. If you like noir...well, this is straight up your alley. BY THE NAILS OF THE WARPRIEST is so rich, it's too bad it's short like that. I would've taken 500 pages of this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book January 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is probably the best thing I've read from Nik Korpon so far. With everything I read he seems to become a better and better writer. I loved the dystopian setting he has created. Hopefully we'll see more stories set in this world. The only problem I had with it is that it was too short. I wanted more! Great book.
