First of all, the characters of Bizet's Carmen lend themselves perfectly to the world of rock fusion. They are larger than life, rebellious, romantic, the story is a Bruce Springsteen anthem in the making. The composers and producers of this version have taken full advantage of this similarity, deciding to merge antiquity with funky modern obsurdity. The musical content contains such demon characters as mechanical laughing boxes in a breakdown of classical piano presentation. Croakingly ancient-sounding voices crackle from a victrola player about eternal love. Children sing menacingly and tap dance about a not so perfect candyland of a world. A classic Carmen overture becomes boomingly funky when joined by a lively moog accompaniment. A Toreador laughs in overdone macho fashion about his power with women over New Orleans jazz.
Weaving throughout, a narration in gentle spanish folk style over acoustic guitar tells the details of this unfolding tale. But the true unifying and most impressive soulful voice of Melba Moore is the soul of Carmen, providing the seductive passion of a broken barrio heart, the doomed and inescapable face that has haunted men and women's dreams across the centuries. I cannot imagine anyone else but her in this role and it is tremendously beautiful. Without Melba Moore I doubt Carmen ever could have become Naked Carmen.
Needless to say, this is not your everyday piece of work, The cover of the LP in itself says it all. In one leaf, Carmen looks out at you through a mount of roses, her reflection is literally nuclear in a mushroom cloud. It is a statement of what you will find inside and at once the timelessness of Carmen herself.
I believe that Bruce Swedien of Mercury Records of Chicago has provided sound engineering on this album, you can also see his credits in this respect on a better known album by Michael Jackson, "Thriller".
