Naked Gun: From the Files of the Police Squad!

David Zucker--of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker creative troika behind Airplane! and television's Police Squad!--directed this 1988 feature film based on the latter show. Leslie Nielsen returns to his old TV role of Lt. Frank Drebin, the deadpan idiot with a detective's badge. The reinvention of the failed series as a theatrical feature seems to have inspired everyone involved to make a pretty funny movie, and the jokes gather a momentum that lasts until the final act. Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is being invaded by Drebin during routine questioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman. There's a hilarious bit when Drebin--wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom--can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand). Yes, that's O.J. Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. --Tom Keogh

Naked Gun: 2 1/2 - The Smell of Fear

It's more of Leslie Nielsen's Lt. Frank Drebin, the bumbling cop from the old Police Squad! television series. This time, Drebin uncovers a plot--led by supervillain Robert Goulet!--to sabotage America's energy policy. The jokes don't stick as well as those of the first film (Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!), but there are some very funny slapstick moments, including several involving former First Lady Barbara Bush (played by an actress, of course). --Tom Keogh

Naked Gun: 3 1/3 - The Final Insult

The usual way of the world is that sequels amount to thinner and thinner carbon copies of the original. But not in the case of Naked Gun movies, which only seemed to get funnier with each new entry. This third episode in the series finds Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) retired from his police squad and married to the woman of his dreams (Priscilla Presley). But he is pressed back into action to infiltrate a group of terrorists who plan to blow up the Oscars. The filmmakers make hay with spoofs of prison films and, particularly, of the Oscars themselves, in an award-show send-up that includes such real-life stars as Raquel Welch and Pia Zadora--and Drebin being mistaken for Phil Donahue. The takeoff on the dreadful production numbers that always drag out the Academy Awards will have you howling. --Marshall Fine

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't worry Naked Gun fans! October 3, 2007
Format:DVD
For those of you who are worried about getting this set because it might not have the special features from the individual Naked Gun discs, don't worry. All three movies in the set have the same commentaries and trailers from the previously released DVDs. So not worth the double-dip for those that have the flicks already, but for the cost conscious new buyer of the Naked Guns, a great value for three great movies and all the special features from before.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will laugh and then laugh some more.. July 29, 2004
Format:DVD
The Naked Gun series is probably one of the funniest movie sagas ever created. And that is quite the statement when you look at all the other series out like for instance Scary Movie.

But Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, Naked Gun 2 1/2 the Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33 1/3 The Final Insult are all gems and full of non stop laughs within.

Leslie Nielsen is a perfect choice as Lt. Frank Dreben, a bumbling police detective who works for a special division of the police force known as "Police Squad". Along for the ride is his partner Nordburg (performed by O.J. Simpson) and the captain Ed (George Kennedy) all provide more then a handful of laughs as they bumble through from location to location in search of the would be criminal. Of course no cop is complete without a woman to fill your every hearts desire and the woman for Frank is Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) who seems to always be mixed in with the wrong crowd in all 3 movies only to learn that she always had what she needed in Frank each time.

The first movie, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, is definitely the cut above the other two. Full of laughs, originality, sight gags and one of the funniest end scenes of a movie ever. This movie was pretty much a spin off of the failed TV show in the early 80s named "Police Squad" and kept a lot of the jokes from the show within except being able to stretch a lot to the PG 13 rating. Lots of sexual innuendo, one liners and weird situations make this a laugh a minute. Frank has to stop a rich business man (Ricardo Montalbán) from using a hypnotic mind control device so he can kill the Queen of England. The adventures take us from the Middle East to Drug Boats to Hospitals and to a baseball game like no other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius April 17, 2003
Format:DVD
In 1980 Leslie Neilson went from serious respectable roles to the doctor on board a chaos controlled plane, in the first spoof, Flying High. The Naked Gun series is the epitomy of spoof comedy. Even the final credits are hilariously funny. The right blend of serious attitudes to insanely stupid things is what makes this work. "When i see a queerly dressed man stabing someone in full view of 100 people, i shoot the bastard thats my policy!" "That was a park production of Macbeth. You killed 5 actors, good ones." Genius lines such as this fixed the first Naked Gun as a classic. The aptely named Naked Gun 2 1/2 fell right into place. "Whats he doing in the Red Light District?" " Sex Frank?" "Not right now Ed we have work to do" Even better. The third lacked the puch the other 2 had but was still hilarious. But the one defining thing for all naked guns is the credits at the begginning. The top of the police car going all sorts of places. Womens change rooms, Star Wars, the whomb and many other out of the blue locations. These are all winners!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Satirical Comedies Around April 22, 2002
Format:DVD
What can I say about the Naked Gun movies except that they are absolutely hilarious. The fact that they are being released in a DVD box set is indeed an added bonus. These movies star Leslie Nielson who plays "not-so-bright" Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad. These films along with the Airplane! movies set the standard for satirical comedy. The films co-star Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson (remember him?), George Kennedy, Ricardo Mantalban, Robert Goulet, Fred Ward, Anna Nicole Smith, et al. These are not by any means meant to be "serious". They're the type of movies you can just sit back and let loose from reality for a few hours. So for those of you who haven't seen these yet, and you want "laugh-out-loud" fun, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars The revival of Police Squad May 11, 2004
Format:DVD
In the ealy 80's,Leslie Nielsen starred in a short-lived police sitcom called "Police Squad". In this 3-film collection,Nielsen starred with different actors, those that did not appear on the sitcom. In THE NAKED GUN:From The Files Of Police Squad,Officer Nordberg(O.J. Simpson) is injuriously shot by gangsters, resulting in hospitalization. The Queen of England appears at a Reds-Dodgers baseball game and is about to be shot to death by one of the players. In this film, lieutenant Frank Drebin meets Jane Spencer(Priscilla Presley) who'd later become his girlfriend. At the end,Nordberg is out of the hospital, but in a wheelchair and Frank is promoted to Captain. In the NAKED GUN 2 1/2:The Smell Of Fear, the Police Squad staff bring to justice an impostor posing as an invalid doctor who was about to give a speech at a dinner. The real doctor, with Nordberg,Frank and Ed Hocken(George Kennedy) all pose as a Mexican band. It turns out that there was a bomb about to explode inside the establishment where the dinner took place. Again,Jane is in distress and is saved by Frank. In the NAKED GUN 33 1/3:The Final Insult,Frank and Jane are now married(they became engaged in the last scene of the first film). Frank enjoys his brief retirement from the police force(Police Squad threw a party for him after 30 years of service). Post-retirement,Ed and Nordberg visit Frank, who is cooking and cleaning. Frank's retirement is paused by a desperate favor of Ed's and Nordberg's. Again,a bomb is about to explode. This time at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, where an Oscar ceremony takes place. And again,Jane is kidnapped and rescued after her brief separation from Frank. Frank's unexpected return to Police Squad caused the separation. Then,Frank and Nordberg are about to become fathers.
