Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The usual way of the world is that sequels amount to thinner and thinner carbon copies of the original. But not in the case of Naked Gun movies, which only seemed to get funnier with each new entry. This third episode in the series finds Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) retired from his police squad and married to the woman of his dreams (Priscilla Presley). But he is pressed back into action to infiltrate a group of terrorists who plan to blow up the Oscars. The filmmakers make hay with spoofs of prison films and, particularly, of the Oscars themselves, in an award-show send-up that includes such real-life stars as Raquel Welch and Pia Zadora--and Drebin being mistaken for Phil Donahue. The takeoff on the dreadful production numbers that always drag out the Academy Awards will have you howling. --Marshall Fine

Product Description

Leslie Nielsen returns as the intrepid (and accident-prone) Lt. Frank Drebin in Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, "un film de David Zucker." This second feature film from the "Police Squad!" series finds Drebin as a guest at a White House dinner, receiving an award for shooting his 1,000th drug dealer, although he admits to shooting only 998 - he ran over the last two in his car. ("Luckily, they turned out to be drug dealers"). Also at the White House dinner is energy czar Dr. Albert S. Meinheimer (Richard Griffiths), whom President George Bush (John Roarke) has chosen to start a new national energy policy. Since Meinheimer believes in promoting alternative energy resources, the evil leaders of the polluting energy industries (coal, oil, and nuclear power-or the lobby groups SMOKE, SPILL and KABOOM) are horrified at Bush's choice. Joining together with arch-villain Quentin Hapsburg (Robert Goulet), they plan to kidnap the real Meinheimer and substitute a fake Meinheimer in his place who will enact energy policy according to the dictates of the energy lobby. Drebin becomes deeply involved in the conspiracy when he runs into his ex-girl friend Jane (Priscilla Presley), who is not only Meinheimer's public relations director but also Hapsburg's current paramour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leslie Neilsen..... The God of Spoofs. November 21, 1999
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Like Charlie Sheen in "Hotshots" and Cary Elwes in "Robin Hood, Men in Tights", the key to a successful spoof is to have the cast keep a straight face throughout all the jokes. Leslie is the king at that. The three naked guns are (along with the Austin Powers movies and Blazing saddles) the best spoofs ever made. All of Leslies others (Spy Hard, Dracula, dead and loving it, Wrongfully accused and the abominable Mr Magoo) don't even come close. 33 1/3 is my least favourite Naked Gun movie and I still watch it all the time. They are all absolutely Hillarious. Watch out for the Sperm bank scene. It is one of the funniest scenes on film.

After the success of "The Naked Gun", a sequal was immediately written. After a three year interval, Drebin and Police Squad returned. The film is somewhat slow, and is definately not as good as the first. It does have some hysterical sequences and I was surprised when one was left out. When Frank and Quentin confront each other near the end, Quentin never tells Frank to stand "over there". Frank then answers "...where?" Quentin becomes distracted and points the gun to the wall. Frank takes it from him and Quentin repeats this routine on Frank. This scene appears on VHS but must have been left on the DVD cutting room floor.....

5.0 out of 5 stars They just kept getting better December 16, 2002
Format:DVD
Naked Gun is one of the few series that was never short on laughs or gags as time and sequels went on. Leslie is again Frank Dremond, now a retired cop making brownies. But Police Squad calls him back for help. It seems terrorists (lead by the infamous Papsmeir!) is planning on blowing up the Academy Awards, not a bad idea if you think about it, but they must be stopped.

The Sperm bank and prison scenes had me howling with laughter, and Anna Nicole Smith had me howling like a wolf in heat. Also catch Raquel Welch at the awards giving an introduction with Leslie Neilsen disguised as Phil Donahue.

This film rocks from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest of all time October 29, 2007
Format:DVD
OMG, this movie is beyond belief and funnier than life itself. Leslie Nielson really perfected the role as Frank Drebin. I didn't care for the sequences that were about Frank's wife, Jane. However, Frank himself was unbelievable, especially at the academy awards, where he made a giant spectacle of himself. I really laughed when he ran off stage, saw tanya, and when she tried to seduce him, you should've seen the look on his face when he saw that she had a......well I can't say. You'd have to see for yourself. It was hilarious. This movie is timeless, and priceless. This belongs in the collection of any true comedy fan.

Watching this 1991 sequel to Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, is like opening a time capsule. A slapstick comedy/satire set in Washington, DC, during the Presidency of George H. W. Bush, the plot involves the kidnapping of Dr. Albert Meinheimer (Richard Griffiths), the President's energy czar, who wants to reduce the country's pollution and its dependence on coal, oil, and nuclear power. Working as the Public Relations Director of the Meinheimer Institute, is Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley), to whom Police Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) was once engaged (until he was found in a compromising situation with the Queen in Naked Gun I). Jane is now the lover of Quentin Hapsburg (Robert Goulet), who has planned the Meinheimer kidnapping.

Filled with sight gags, one-liners, parodies of other films, stock comedy routines, jokes hidden within the sets (a portrait of Mike Dukakis on the wall, for example), and non-stop action that runs amok, the plot is the least of director David Zucker's concerns. Lt. Drebin (Nielsen), his romance with Jane, and his constant missteps as an investigator serve as the primary focus. Goulet acts the suitably oily villain, and actors George Kennedy and O. J. Simpson, who work with Drebin, are as bumbling as he is.

In the opening scene, a Presidential reception hosted to honor Drebin by President George H. W. Bush (played by John Roarke, who is hilariously realistic), Drebin decks Barbara Bush several times (with Margery Ross, who plays the First Lady as a valiant trouper, always coming up smiling). The setting quickly changes to a strip joint, a bowling alley, and operating room, and eventually includes a bomb site, a blues bar, and a dance-reception before the chases start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Have you tried sexy underwear? August 18, 2000
Format:VHS Tape
This, I think, is the best work of comedy ever made. Some of the jokes are a stretch, though, but most work. And when they do, they are absolutely laugh out loud fall out of your seat roll on the ground funny. This I think is the best naked gun movie of the bunch, full of one liners, puns and prat falls, this movie will make you laugh, I swear. The only problem is that a couple of the jokes are too disgusting, like when Tanya (I think that was her name) turns out to be a hermaphridite. That was just odd. The ending was a little dry of jokes, but basically it was all good. The starting scenes with Frank's dream and when he wakes up are brilliant. My favorite scene: Frank in the sperm bank, one of the funniest scenes on film. I strongly suggest you buy this one and the other two. This is the best because it didn't have any jokes lifted from the TV series it was based on, Police Squad! like the other two movies.
