Review

An extraordinary book that exposes hypocrisy in our society. ...fascinating account, Gottlieb's honesty and freethinking is evident from the beginning. -- The Think Club

The NAKED MIND, by Dr. Sheldon Gottlieb is one of the most
fascinating, insightful and powerful books I have ever read.
In plain language it explained to me what we take for
granted in our every day speech, i.e., the prevalence of
ideologies in every day life and their devastating affects
on all aspects of society. His conversational tone carried
me along as he explored diverse topics with a breadth and
depth of knowledge and facility of language one doesn't
usually associate with an academic scientist. His
imaginative development of the Goebbels Award should be read
by everyone, especially by all members of the media and by
all elected and appointed governmental officials. I consider
his uncovering the reasons for the conversion of Edith Stein
to be a literary coup; it demonstrates how the powerful mind
of a trained scientist could be used in literary analysis As
a physician, I was particularly enthralled by his clear
analyses of the biological bases of human sexuality, human
individuality and freedom, the evolution-creation debate and
the differences between science and religion, Also, as a
physician, I found his chapter on the deadly influence of
ideology on the treatment of multiple sclerosis to be so
fascinating that I consider it to be an absolute must read
for anyone interested not just in this disease but in the
history and sociology of medicine.

"The Naked Mind" is an extremely interesting look at a lifelong assault on prejudice and ignorance. I especially enjoyed the unmasking of those who often perpetrate these wrongs in the name of some higher moral authority. Hats off to Professor Gottlieb for his courage and tenacity!
