Book Description

"Like Stephen King, he knows how to summon serious scares." - Bentley Little, The Burning

"Scott Nicholson knows the territory. Follow him at your own risk." -- Stewart O'Nan, A Face in the Crowd

SOLOM: THE NARROW GATE

Book #2 in the Solom series

After the violent death of Katy Logan's psychopathic husband, she inherits a farm in the Appalachian Mountain town of Solom.

Determined to protect her teen daughter Jett and not surrender to fear, she builds a new life in the wake of the tragedy. However, the dark forces that drove her husband to madness still lurk in Solom, and a horseback preacher has returned from the grave with a sinister mission. Solom's slumbering spirits are stirring, the herds of goats are restless, and the townspeople are banding together to ward off the sinister force that threatens to destroy them.

Katy and Jett discover an unexpected ally as they are drawn into the supernatural showdown, but is anyone--or anything--powerful enough to walk away from Solom's final battleground?

I really loved the first book in the series and The Narrow Gate tops it by far. Scott Nicholson has ramped up the action, scares ,creepy critters and also introduced us to the people of Solom as they band together.I just loved getting to know these ordinary mountain folk that have an extraordinary problem. Keep them coming,Mr. Nicholson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the two February 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
It’s not often that a sequel exceeds its predecessor, but THE NARROW GATE does so in spades.

In this second installment, Nicholson introduces us to the entire community of Solom, baring its flaws and secrets, and characters that I was able to relate. Characters with different motivations always enhance a story and that includes the supernatural entities. The characters are well presented to the reader as lively, interesting, memorable people from the Appalachians, which Nicholson knows so well.

Jett and her mother from the first book are back having stayed in Solom after Gordon’s death, convinced that they were now safe from that evil influence and a need to maintain a presence on their inherited property. The goats were back to being goats and the headless ghost of Rebecka, apparently appeased with the death of her abusive husband Gordon, has taken a hike.

Nothing is so simple in Solom. Harmon, the Preacher is still around claiming a victim every so often and Solom has accepted the fact over the years. But Harmon doesn’t seem happy with just one victim and there seems to be a different reason for his return.
The tension begins early and builds throughout the book as Nicholson’s prose propels the reader to a satisfying climax involving the entire community, the Preacher, and the Scarecrow. Oh, you thought he was gone? Ha. What further horror can these two evil entities inflict on Solom that is worse than the murder of a Solom resident?

THE SCARROW is good, THE NARROW GATE is superb.

I really am not interested in man eating goats. The reviews sounded great. I should have stopped once I finished the sample.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow March 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Like all of the Scott Nicholson books I've read, this book definitely had an ending I didn't see coming. I about freaked out when a county cop car showed up. Sheriff Littlefield had already been mentioned, and what was going on definitely wasn't something he needed. Although, come to think of it, I don't think anyone in Solom needed that. Having said all that, the character of Alex provided some much needed comic relief, just by the sheer bulk of his paranoia. I guess one wouldn't need to read the first book in the series to somewhat understand this one, but I was glad I had read the first as it gave background to understand ALL that was going on in the final showdown. I have a feeling we will be seeing The Horseback Preacher and Old Saint again, or at least I hope so.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Night of the Living Zombie Goat"...and then some! March 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Narrow Gate, though easily read independently, is the sequel to Solom The Scarecrow. The same characters, a year later, must deal with the ghostly preacher who returns regularly to the little town of Solom. But oh yes, there are zombie goats, more evil than in the last novel.

I must state than I am a huge fan of Scott Nicholson. Since the passing of James Herbert, I'd been searching for a truly creepy gothic novelist to fill my thirst of all things ghostly. Nicholson is that author.

Go ahead, pick up Solom The Scarecrow and Solom The Narrow Gate. You will not be disappointed!

The perfect mix of Appalachian ghost lore, tension between parents and youngsters, creepy scenes, and colorful characters. Always enjoyable. I recommend reading the first part of the series first.

Predictable action, but fun, creepy characters and surroundings. Enjoyable reading despite editing flaws (lots of grammatical and spelling errors).

I believe the writer only creates half the story, and that you complete it by bringing your imagination, experience, and heart to the tale. I am happy to share the journey with you.

I've written more than 20 novels, about 80 short stories, four children's books, some comic books, screenplays, and a couple of non-fiction books, as well as five collaborations with J.R. Rain. Many of my tales are based on supernatural legends from the Southern Appalachian Mountains, and I also write mystery and suspense thrillers that are most often compared to the work of Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

I've also published Liquid Fear and Chronic Fear with Amazon's Thomas & Mercer imprint and McFall with 47North, as well as a number of audiobooks and foreign translations.
