Found out about this from a professional nit-picker,

Why me? never thought my kids would get lice. I have been sending my daughter to school with her hair up. Have been spraying "fairy tales" repelent on her before school but lo and behold she got lice. Interesting enough, she never itched. I found out about the lice because there was a little bug dangling from the front of her hair when I picked her up at school. Turns out this bug was not lice but it caused me to look closer. Not knowing what I was looking for, I just assumed, yes, she has it. I had purchased the "Fairy Tales" non-pesticide lice shampoo kit to have on hand just in case so I set this in action. The next day we went to the school nurse to see if she was clear before she went to her classroom (there was a substitute nurse on duty this day). She found no live bugs, tons of empty casings and said she was "clean". Turns out she wasn't. I had purchased the Medi-Comb at our local pharmacy and pulled out a live bug after school. By this point, there were hundreds of nits - they are so tiny and her hair is dirty blond so they are very hard to spot. The medi-comb was awful - sort of like using a razor. It cut my hair, cut the kids hair, cut their scalps... everyone's crying - just awful. We googled lice ad infinitum and decided to try the mayo/vinegar treatment. Next morning I pulled out another live louse. By now I have spent at least 20 hours laundering stuffed animals, pillows, bedding, backpacks, boiling hairbrushes, vacuuming furniture, mattresses, etc. and everything we tried was not working. After only three days of lice I was already close to the edge.
My husband found out about a professional nit-picker in our area. I had a phone consultation with her and set up an appointment to have my daughter "nit-picked" the next day. She recommended dousing her hair in olive oil and covered with a shower cap for at least 8 hours - I did this and it was more like 11 hours that she had the oil on. I combed out and found another live louse!! OMG!! at this point I am so glad we are about to see the pro. She pulled out 300 nits from my daughter's hair! Now bear in mind, I am a stay at home mom.. with my kids all the time. Always doing elaborate french braiding hairstyles on my daughter and I never even knew she had this! The live bugs are so tiny that I needed a magnifying glass to even know if they were alive. Anyway, the pro used the Lice Meister on my daughter and then on me. Unfortunately she pulled 33 nits off of me. The comb was great though. Very soft on the skin. Both our hair is very fine and it didn't get all of the nits but did get many. There was still a lot of hand picking required. I hope our odyssey is over soon. Still in the midst of this but wanted to offer an account in hopes of helping others and also I do highly recommend this comb. The pro's second recommendation if you can't find this one on the shelves is the two pack by RID - metal teeth with plastic red handles. Also very good (this was all I could find in my area). It pulled out a lot of stuff prior to us seeing the pro. Hope this helps.

Worth the expense for a quality comb,
This review is from: The LiceMeister® Comb (Health and Beauty)
Our pharmacist friend recommended this comb when we discovered our daughter had lice. We could not find one, they are not stocked in most stores in our area so we borrowed theirs. I had purchased the OTC lice treatment shampoo/conditioner system (RID)but the cruddy little comb that comes in the kits is nearly worthless. We tried combing through her long, fine hair without success to remove anything. I spent hours picking through to remove nits and it was a horrible experience. Later, I caught up with the other family and borrowed their Licemeister comb. What a difference! It combed through my daughter's fine hair and removed things relatively easily and even combed through my thick hair with ease. The spacing between the teeth narrows as it gets closer to the handle, making it easier to adjust depending on the hair type.
A few months later we had the unrivaled joy of discovering lice again. We were camping far from civilization and the little grocery store we went to just happened to have this comb in stock. They did not carry any lice killing shampoo, so I took my mom's advice and bought Listerine instead. The regular kind. We doused the kids' heads in Listerine and then tied a grocery bag onto their head/hair for 20 minutes. I stepped into the shower with each one and washed as I combed through their hair. Not only did the Listerine work better at killing the lice--they were either dead or stunned from the alcohol when I combed them out, it also helped loosen the nits and most combed out with the comb. This was a significantly different experience from the last lice episode. The kids' hair stayed fresh smelling for a week or so, no dangerous pesticides were necessary, and we never found another nit or louse in our follow up over the next 2 weeks. All in all, I would highly recommend this product for combing through nearly any hair type. Some combs are better designed for medium thickness straight hair. This one is great for curly, straight, thin, or thick hair. Though our kids have typical caucasian somewhat curly hair, I think this would also work well for folks with different hair types. With a drawer full of combs now as we tried different ones for our screenings, this is the one I turn to first when I can find it!

Ugh. I never thought I would be needing to write a review about head lice control products. But one of my kids managed to get them. It wasn't his fault - we went ziplining and of course you have to use the helmets they provide. Little did we suspect they don't treat the helmets in between uses! What a bummer.
Anyhow, the comb. Well, it's well made, works sooooo much better than the crappy combs they supply with various shampoos and other lice treatments, and basically does what it says. It also comes with good advice about things to do and not to do to ensure you have the problem under control. What a frustrating problem to deal with, but so far, by using the comb daily without chemicals, we have been able to keep the infestation from spreading to our other two kids and now have our son lice-free. You do have to be very diligent. You have to use it EVERY DAY until you have gone several days without finding any nits. You also have to keep your infected child away from the other kids and continually clean his bedding. But if you do these things you can avoid the harsh chemicals. It's really the best strategy.
