5.0 out of 5 stars Justice for Summer (and Caylee) November 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Nation's Daughter will keep you reading until the very last page. I found this book to be very similar to a real life trial that played out in the media. Whether you are a parent, sister, cousin, or aunt -- this book will grip your heart. As I read The Nation's Daughter, I kept an open mind and tried not to blame any one character until I had all of the facts.

It just amazes me how one little girl could have such an impact on so many people one lie could affect so many people.

This book focuses on the lies and trial of Autumn James, who is accused of killing her daughter Summer. As her story changed, you could easily spot the lies. Autumn is a manipulative, self-centered, spoiled brat! During the trial, her family chose not to attend mainly because they didn't want to add to the media circus. The one innocent person called to the stand was used as a pawn in Autumn's crazy web of lies and mind games. Kyle Thompson is Autumn's ex-boyfriend. He blames himself for Summer's death. He thinks Summer would be alive had he handled things differently with Autumn. What he doesn't realize is that Autumn is so selfish and self-absorbed that she would do the same regardless. I really felt bad for Kyle being blamed by the media, Autumn and the world for Summer's death. His family and his best friend, Gerry were the only ones to stand by him.

The Nation's Daughter is a great read for those who love law, suspense, and thrillers. I loved this book and really didn't want to put it down.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you like a quick thriller - check this one out! October 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My thoughts:
Valerie Maarten has created dynamic characters. She has given them personalities and qualities that make you like them or hate them from the start. I was broken hearted by Autumn's callous behavior, and shocked by it at the same time.
The story is short, but not an easy read. The topic is the death of a small child and so there is nothing light and fluffy about this story. The characters struggle with a variety of ideals throughout the book. They are struggling with: beliefs, the courage to defend those beliefs, the decision of innocence or guilt, and what to do when you find yourself not where you planned to be.
I was amazed by the number of characters that felt they had, by some action or verbal interaction, played a part in Summer's death. I was equally amazed by their unwillingness to do anything about it.
The one theme that I found endearing was friendship/love. What would you be willing to do for someone that you loved?
This was not my favorite story, the subject matter made it a hard read. I liked the book, the story was intriguing and moved along without getting lost in random, unnecessary details or fillers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Elementary... July 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have never left a bad review, and I hope that that author takes this as it is meant - as a helpful suggestion. Please take a high school or entry level college writing class and correct the MANY errors in this book. It was difficult to get through it with the tenses jumping around, sometimes within the same sentence. There are multiple spelling errors, as well. The story was taken directly from the Casey Anthony trial, and there were not really any surprises - except at the very end. The only reason I finished this book is because I'd already invested a few hours in it before all the errors in style became so annoying.

2.0 out of 5 stars So many plot holes and mistakes!
First off, I will admit that the story was interesting. It kept me reading in spite of the grammar/punctuation/attention-to-detail side of me.

But soooo many mistakes. Read more

More About the Author

Let me introduce myself...

I have been writing ever since I discovered that letters made sounds and a combination of letters made words. It wasn't until recently that I decided to share my work with the public at large.

It's true what people say about writers, "they don't write for fame, fortune and glory...they write for the love of writing and sharing." I'm sure most of my fellow writers know what I'm talking about. I know I'm not the only one that invested in rubbermaid storage bins to store your earlier, written work (before the laptop), just in case you decided to go public.

The only thing I love more than writing, besides the obvious (God, family, life and country), is reading. As you will soon learn, I have an eclectic taste in what I read. There isn't a romance genre that I will pass up. I've recently began reading suspense and paranormal romance and have dabbled in the vampire series, once in a while.

But one day, I'm going to reach in my storage bin and dust off that masterpiece I've been working on.

Until then...
