Review

<DIV>"The Nature of California offers an agreeable overview of animals and plants casual hikers and campers are likely to encounter ... a useful book to keep with the picnic supplies or camping gear."
- LA Times
"With so many detailed guides in print, it would be tempting to overlook this book, yet it fills a valuable niche. Small and light, [it features] lovely color illustrations of several hundred species of plants, mammals, reptiles, fish and birds."

Searching for a field guide is rather frustrating I suppose. Originally my plans were to get a book that can help me identify plants out in parks, marshes, and in urban areas in the South Bay area of Los Angeles.

Going through Amazon's searches, I found all sorts of books but mostly focusing on the wilder side of California such as deserts or exotic plants most likely found in rich, flourishing forests of the North (San Gabriel Mountains). The face of the South Bay is mostly an urban one, where parks are scarce and lands are filled with homes or oil refineries. The point is, most of the books found on the first page is not practical to me, someone who visits parks, marshes and whatnot from time to time due to the distances of the real great outdoors. Of course there are some available throughout the county but again, what I had in mind for its use is something for traveling around the neighborhood, or walking along my college campus and basically learn about the environment around *me*.

The Nature of California is a great book because already I can I identify some plants and animals listed in the book and they just happen to be outside my front yard. A great start, for this price compare to others it's indeed a great purchase. I actually picked one up for $11.95USD at a local Barns and Nobles but don't tell that to Amazon! :X

Alright, so at this point you're probably wondering about the cons. Well.. the con is that I wish there was more information. While it has nice colored illustrations, names, scientific name, a short description, habitat and comments. I was hoping for it to explain it's origins too, like the reason for its name and whatnot. You know, neat little facts such as a Dandelion, how it's name is really Teeth (or is it tooth?

This is a great resource of the common life forms of California. The book makes for a rewarding experience because, since the plants and animals are common, the chances of successfully finding out what you're seeing are likely. I would love to see this book made into a 2nd version that covered only Northern California.

As a newcomer to California and a bird and wildlife enthusiast, I had hoped that this book would inform me of the birds and wildlife I was seeing on a daily basis.

Unfortunately the limitations of the book left me having to go to an alternative resource for even the most common of hawks as they were not displayed or discussed in the book.

I would describe this book as disappointing, although there was some good information on plants and wild flowers.

I guess this would be great as an entry-level person, as it gives illustrations and explanations of some popular animals, fish, and plants of California. Further research will be needed.
