Book Description

Take Control of Your Career
Job security used to mean counting on a company to support you until retirement. Well, the rules have changed—companies downsize, jobs are outsourced, and pensions are eliminated as fast as the fluctuating economy. There’s good news, however—the new job security is alive and well and centered in you, not in a company.
In this newly revised edition of The New Job Security, executive career-management consultant Pam Lassiter presents the five best strategies for achieving work security and success, from building a supportive network that returns your calls to creating new jobs rather than wasting time on advertised openings. Thoroughly updated with the latest tactics, technology, and trends, plus advice from nationwide business leaders and career experts, this is the career book for the new economy.
The New Job Security will help you to:
•  Uncover interesting alternative jobs
•  Generate multiple income streams
•  Shape your job so that it reflects your values and goals
•  Move successfully within your company
•  Plan for career transitions so that they’re under your control
Filled with practical exercises, real-life examples, online resources, and a refreshingly no-nonsense approach, The New Job Security is a strategic plan to gain control of your career and never worry about job stability again.

I adopted these strategies about a year ago to help me through a career transition. I owe a debt of gratitude to this book, as it has truly enabled me to find not only work that I love, but also compensation that I am very happy with. I am such a believer that I was really excited to buy it for a second time with this revised edition of the original, which has some great insight on modern social networking.

This book has been an indispensable tool for me. The author's techniques and strategies are quite simple and logical, but were nonetheless eye-opening. After reading this book for the first time, I found myself saying, "This is so obvious...why haven't I been doing this all along?" For me, the answer is that I never went through any formal education on how to manage my career. I mistakenly thought that I would naturally be good at it. But really I was stuck in a rut of complacency, letting my career just sort of "happen." This book teaches you to seize control of your career. Use the 5 strategies (#1 Send Clear Signals, #2 Market for Mutual Benefit, #3 Stop Looking For Jobs, #4 Build Sustainable Networks, #5 Negotiate In Round Rooms) laid out in this book, and you will find that yourself working "smarter, not harder."

I am not a natural "networker," so I found the homework assignments to be particularly effective.
WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE HOME (or make a single phone call) without a well-practiced "Elevator Story" (p.31), or PAR -Plan Action Result- Story (p.22). These simple exercises take only minutes to do, but really will set you apart from the pack in both casual conversation and in formal interviewing. The book is full of similar helpful assignments and techniques and really will make you look impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for navigating a job search October 13, 2010
This book provides a completely realistic perspective on job searching in the 21st century in a tough economy. It's readable and realistic - a rare combination.
It's not a book for recent college graduates and I'm not sure the author's suggestions would work well for a career changer. But if you have some solid experience and you want a job - especially if you've been laid off or downsized, this book is one of the best.

Some of the best parts:

-- Check out the 5-second resume test (p 32)
-- the chemistry factor (p 42)
-- why you need to resist the siren call of job postings
and search firms (p 73)
-- new ways to work in today's job market (p 98)
-- how to set limits on projects to demonstrate your skills (p 100)
-- pros and cons of social networking online (p 126)
-- preparing for salary negotiation (p 171)
-- negotiating through search firms (p 185)

I cannot recommend this book more highly! I lost my job in the midst of last year's month I was a high-flying sales executive; the next month I was without a job. My first reaction was to look at job postings...but they were few and far between. My second reaction was to call search firms, expecting that they would be able to help. Fortunately, my third reaction was to look to experts for advice, and that was when I found Lassiter's The New Job Security. The first edition was extraordinarily helpful; the new edition goes far further in talking about the whole new social networking environment that has revolutionized job seeking and job creation.

It's a remarkable book that completely changed my approach to my career. "Send Clear Signals" helped me realize that we must start by looking at ourselves before we can let others know who we are and what we want. "Market for Mutual Benefit" stops us from focusing only on ourselves and positions us to focus on the needs of our potential employers and their customers. "Stop Looking for Jobs" teaches us how to stop chasing job openings and begin creating new opportunities by anticipating and solving problems. "Build Sustainable Networks" addresses the fact that 65% to 85% of jobs are found through networking...and Lassiter provides an excellent step-by-step roadmap to building an effective and mutually-beneficial networking strategy. Finally, "Negotiate in Round Rooms" provides pragmatic advice and counsel to closing the deal...something very few of us are comfortable with or good at.

You owe it to yourself to read this book....whether you are in transition or whether you want to grow within your current company. As Lassiter points out, "Executives expect to hold their jobs for 5.6 years and end up only doing so for 2.1 years". This happened to me and it could, and probably will, happen to you...get ahead of it and be prepared for the future!
