Book Description

At a time when the national political debate is about inequality and fairness, bestselling author David Horowitz and coauthor Jacob Laksin have written an unsettling book about the distribution of power in America. Thoroughly researched and amply documented, The New Leviathan overturns the conventional wisdom about which end of the political spectrum represents the rich and powerful, and which represents the people.

The Democratic Party presents itself to the electorate as the party of working families and the poor. In the 2000 election campaign, Democrat Al Gore ran on the slogan “The People vs. the Powerful,” while President Obama describes himself as a “grassroots organizer” and a spokesman for “fairness” and “progressive change.” Such is the world of political myth. In reality, the Democrats and the Obama progressives represent the richest and most powerful political machine in American history. Backed by a near trillion-dollar treasury in America’s oldest and largest tax-exempt foundations, progressives outspend conservatives by a factor of seven to one.

In The New Leviathan, David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin examine this growing financial power of left-wing organizations and politicians. They show how left-wing foundations underwrote the political career of Barack Obama and how massive funding advantages for progressive proposals have disenfranchised American voters and shifted the national policy debate dramatically to the left. The New Leviathan draws connections between the Obama administration and progressive organizations from labor unions to media outlets to nonprofits to political groups, and shows how on key policy fronts—national security, immigration, citizenship, environment, and health care—the sheer force of left-wing financial resources has reconfigured the nation’s political agenda.

Wikipedia defines "Leviathan" as a sea monster referred to in the Bible. In Demonology, the Leviathan is one of the seven princes of Hell and its gatekeeper."
In this new book of insights, "The `New Leviathan' is a network of billion-dollar tax-exempt foundations and advocacy think tanks that work in concert with government unions and grassroots radical groups to make up the organizational core of the political left. The new Leviathan is not only a political force in the narrow sense of directly influencing electoral outcomes through the support of candidates and parties..."
This many legged or tentacled Monster Octopus is completely invisible to most voters because it works under the camouflaged umbrella of tax-free entitles with charters claiming a goal of improving the public good. They mostly operate as a major force in pushing progressive liberal agendas.
One of the most important points detailed in this short book is the "Myth of the Democrats as the 99% and the Republicans as the 1%." It's a continuation of the falsehood that the "Republicans are the `party of the rich,' while progressives speak for the powerless and the poor." That book proves that this folk lore is exactly the opposite of reality. "Of the twelve richest lawmakers, Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one." A New York Times article by Christopher Caldwell, "The Democratic Party is the party to which elites belong. It is the party of Harvard (and most of the Ivy League), of Microsoft and Apple (and most of Silicon Valley), of Hollywood and Manhattan (and most of the media)...of Goldman Sachs (and most of the investment banking profession)...The Democrats have the support of more, and more active, billionaires. Of the twenty richest ZIP codes in America, ...

"The New Leviathan" is the community of progressive foundations that have an unacknowledged influence on American politics. Horowitz and Laksin provide histories of various major foundations, Ford, MacArthur, etc., focusing on their funding of political action groups. These foundations spend huge amounts of money, they have supported some groups for long periods of time when the group would otherwise have collapsed, and they are unaccountable. Foundations are also vulnerable to the policy views of people who are trained to run foundations, either academically, or through experience at other foundations.

4.0 out of 5 stars eye opener.....but get out the dictionary October 22, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I found this book quite interesting, he goes into great detail about each radicals' life in a very personal and intimate way. David Horowitz style of writing is kind of complicated. He uses very uncommon words for the average reader. I found myself checking the dictionary more than I wanted to, but aside from that he does an extraordinary job showing the reader the depth to which the radical is committed. The radical embraces his leftism as his religion, and the book gives you tremendous insight into this world. I was astonished at the amount of money the left has compared to the right. The Foundations on the left out weigh the right by probably 75%. It is all documented, so you will be shocked when you see it in black and white. An amazing book.

This book is from a reformed leftist author who has been in the belly of the beast and learned to understand the roots of the evil that is consuming Freedom in America.

Obama's myriad scandals and flaws -- from his "Soft Tyranny," dubious elegibility, building a dictatorship inside our Republic, to cover-ups like Fast and Furious, to his Soros and terrorist connections, to his woefully dismal performance on jobs, energy, the economy, and national security -- are but the tip of this Facist agenda.

I'm buying this book and will post a full review when I finish it.

1. I have seen the author present a summary of this book with the citations and some of the tables and charts.

2. Part of this pattern was revealed several years ago. An incredible $79 Billion of the taxpayers' money (about the cost of the Iraq War up though when Saddam was captured) was invested in Global Warming Alarmism through July 2009. (Source: Climate Money, SPPI.)

3. The author is a well-known liberal who saw this from the inside.

4. This book is threatening enough to the Obama agenda that the Trolls (Occupy Amazon?) are starting to gather and mount Saul Alinsky style personal attacks on reviewers in an attempt to prevent people from reading this book. This attempt at censorship is an excellent indication of important substance in what is being reported in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are on the side of the 99% read this book June 28, 2012
Thomas Hobbes, during the 17th century English civil war, wrote his famous book "Leviathan." In it Hobbes defended the importance of an Absolute Monarch, against the democratic pulse of the English working-class. According to Hobbes, a strong Absolute Monarch was the only way to avoid civil war. Hobbes feared without a strong Absolute Monarch, English society would result in "Bellum omnium contra omnes" ("the war of all against all").

Hobbes detested the idea of "separation of powers" doctrine (which would become the foundation stone of the American Constitution, just over 100 years later). He rejected free-speech, favored censorship of the press and obedience from English citizens to political institutions and power.

Horowitz and Laksin demonstrate that the Democrat party and their supporters have become the "New Leviathan." George Soros is Thomas Hobbes reincarnated, but now with money to promote his far-left-wing agenda. We are in the midst of a silent civil war, whereas the English civil war and the American civil war the victors were those supporting democracy and freedom, Horowitz and Laksin clearly show in this current civil war those of us supporting democracy are losing. We are losing to the financial power of the left-wing organizations and politicians.

Hundreds of pages of appendices show that the Democratic Party far out finances politics, over the financially victimized small-party Republicans. The authors lay bare that it is pure myth to believe Democrats represent the 99% and the Republicans the 1%. Exactly the opposite is true. Everyone knows the labor unions, Hollywood, the liberal press, and academia
