Book Description

January 18, 2011

“There are cynics who say that a party platform is something that no one bothers to read and it doesn’t very often amount to much.  Whether it is different this time than it has ever been before, I believe the Republican Party has a platform that is a banner of bold, unmistakable colors, with no pastel shades.” –Ronald Reagan, 1976 Republican National Convention

When Ronald Reagan was called to the podium by President Ford during the 1976 Republican National Convention, he had no prepared remarks. But the unrehearsed speech he gave that night is still regarded as one of the most moving speeches of his political career. The reason he was able to give such a powerful speech on a moment's notice was that he was proclaiming the core principles of his heart and soul, which he had been teaching and preaching for years.

The New Reagan Revolution reveals new insights into the life, thoughts, and actions of the man who changed the world during the 1980s. The challenges and threats we face today are eerily similar to the conditions in the world before the beginning of the Reagan era. The good news is that we already know what works. Ronald Reagan has given us the blueprint. This book is not merely a diagnosis of our nation's ills, but a prescription to heal our nation, rooted in the words and principles of Ronald Reagan. In these pages, you'll find a plan for returning America to its former greatness, soundness, and prosperity. It's the plan Ronald Reagan developed over years of study, observation, and reflection. It's a plan he announced to the nation, straight from his heart, one summer evening during America's 200th year. It's the plan he put into action during his eight years in office as the most effective president of the 20th century, and it is the plan we can use today to help return America to its former greatness, soundness, and prosperity.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ronald Reagan brought America back from the brink of economic ruin and tossed the Evil Empire into the dustbin of history. That is why I call him, with true reverence and the highest of esteem, Ronaldus Magnus. Now his elder son, Michael Reagan, has written the definitive book on Ronald Reagan's vision and achievements. He writes from a close-up perspective no other conservative can match. My friend, Michael Reagan has given us the blueprint for a new Reagan revolution—and he has given Ronald Reagan back to us again. Read it, learn it, live it, love it!"  —Rush Limbaugh, the #1 radio talk show host in America

"Ronald Reagan issued a call to arms and led a revolution against those who claimed that America's best days were behind her. He restored our crumbling economy and collapsed the Soviet Union. Today, Michael Reagan calls us back to Ronald Reagan's principles, which saved America once—and can do so again. The New Reagan Revolution is a practical agenda for refreshing the tree of liberty and returning America to her constitutional roots. This book tells you what you can do to preserve the legacy of freedom for your children and grandchildren. Read it—then live it." –Mark Levin, talk show host and New York Times bestselling author of Liberty and Tyranny

"From a perspective of Ronald Reagan that no one else can offer, Michael Reagan not only shares with us poignant, revealing stories about his father, but takes us inside the mind of the man who inspired a rekindling of America's founding ideals and with them a reawakening of the American spirit. Even better, Michael shows us how the application of these timeless principles can lead us to overcome the most difficult challenges we currently face as a nation -- challenges that are strikingly similar to those Ronald Reagan confronted and conquered."  --David Limbaugh, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Crimes Against Liberty

“Michael Reagan, the elder son of the greatest president of the 20th century, has written the Reaganite roadmap for restoring America's greatness. Only Michael Reagan could have written a book which embraces the full range of Ronald Reagan's intellect and spirit, from his unyielding toughness at Reykjavík and Berlin to his deep compassion for the oppressed. He shows us how to apply the timeless principles of Reagan conservatism to the fast-changing world in which we live. Must reading for every true conservative.” —Newt Gingrich, Former Speaker of the House

"Who better than Michael Reagan to explain to us how Ronald Reagan is not only a great man of history but also a visionary for our future? The New Reagan Revolution is a must read for those who are interested in our past and worried about what tomorrow might bring.  Bravo!" --Peter Schweizer, author of Reagan's War: The Epic Story of His Forty-Year Struggle and Final Triumph Over Communism

I had mixed feelings at times while reading "The New Reagan Revolution: How Ronald Reagan's Principles Can Restore America's Greatness" by Michael Reagan with Jim Denney. The book has a Foreword by Newt Gingrich and is also endorsed on the cover by Rush Limbaugh. Therefore, you can tell right now that if you are a liberal, die hard democrat, or just someone who leans that way, you are not going to like this book much. Unless you are reading it to learn more about conservative principles that Ronald Reagan stood for. If you are a conservative, you are going to enjoy this book much more. I think most people will figure that out by the cover, but wanted to make it clear that if you like this book or not will really be decided by your political views.

Most people that know me also know that I really respect President Reagan, and that I had an opportunity to spend thirty minutes one-on-one with him, discussing a variety of topics. I've also met Michael Reagan at one of his speeches, and enjoyed the speech and the short conversation with him. So why mixed feelings about this newest book of his? Parts I really enjoyed, and other times I felt he went a bit too far with the bashing of democrats and liberals. That's why.

It is a well researched book, with many pages of footnotes and references for those that want to check on the topics in the text. And to be fair, Michael Reagan's criticism is not strictly party line. He criticized republicans in this book too. And while I understand pointing out what you believe is wrong with some beliefs and policies, I enjoyed the positive aspects of the book about President Reagan much more. Also, once must remember that this book was written by President Reagan's son, and rightfully so, Michael Reagan places his father on a pretty high pedestal. If that bothers you, you might not like this book.

The parts of the book where Michael Reagan tells stories about his father, and shares his beliefs and views, I really enjoyed. These are the parts of the book that I hope people read and learn from. I also liked the motivational message encouraging everyone to get involved with our country's system, whether it be at a local level, or higher. The few times that I did not enjoy the book as much were when the author was bashing democrats and liberals and some of the policies and things they have done. It's not that I agree so much with the liberal policies, because I am more conservative and independent. (I agreed with Barry Goldwater when he voted for a Democrat in Arizona because he was the better candidate on the ticket. I too look for the best candidate, and usually side with the conservative based on fiscal matters.) I just felt that some of the liberal bashing was not productive, and I do not think President Reagan would have been as harsh. I remember asking President Reagan about President Clinton, because I met him in January of 1993, right before President Clinton took office. President Reagan said nothing negative at all, but said we would have to see how President Clinton could work with congress for the good of our country.

I don't like how divided the parties have become, and how it seems like there is more time and money spent on defeating the other party that building our country. That is why I didn't like some of this book, because I felt it added to this division, rather than encouraging a bridge to bring the country back together.

Overall, I liked the book, especially for the insight into President Reagan's beliefs and views, and the stories about him. I'd like to see more people follow the model he set, and I hope people will take those positive messages from this book and act on them as Michael Reagan encourages people to do with his action steps at the ends of chapters. Ronald Reagan believed in the greatness of America, and I hope people can recapture that and work together to make sure our country remains great.

Well written book that shares little known insight into one of the greatest leaders of our time. Michael clearly states his Dad wasn't perfect, but he boldly led and absolutely believed in freedom for all, and in the American ideals. a must read for today.

What sets this book apart from the litany of conservative tomes are the personal stories about Michael and his father mixed within Michael's explanation of conservatism. There is great insider information in here, including a violent conflict between Michael and Charlie Black, Ronald Reagan's campaign manager in 1976 and during the beginning of Reagan's 1980 campaign. It really shows the divide within the Republican party at the time that many younger politicos may not realize. It shows that even while President, conservatism was a minority within the Republican party and the degree to which the Reagan camp was considered a thorn in the side of the Republican establishment.

Michael's experience with his father also gives him a mature outlook for conservatism. Michael talks about times when his father was willing to take half a victory rather than none at all, and how this was born out of a confidence that conservatism would be victorious in the long term, not in any disloyalty to conservative ideology. Michael also describes the importance of building coalitions on issues, even if these new partners disagree with you on other issues. This is a bracing juxtaposition against the "purist" movement in conservatism now where ideological purity is more important than a willingness to get things done.
