The Times is now only available with a monthly subscription. $21. This is not worth the money. An individual issue from time to time was worth the money. The app is now deleted. I am irritated about wasting my time. The Times needs to be honest about changes and so does Amazon. Amazon says you can get an individual issue but you can not.

1.0 out of 5 stars No more single issues July 21, 2013

I have purchased the Sunday NYTimes issue every week since I got a Kindle Fire. The new app does not have an optioon to buy a single issue. Big disappointment. I will switch to another Sunday newspaper probably Washington Post. I used to spend $52 a year on BYT - now $0

2.0 out of 5 stars new kindle app awful July 24, 2013

I used to be able to buy that day 's paper but no more! And it seems there is no way to find "today's paper" in the new app. Now the paper is a mess of information without coherent chronology which I have to subscribe to instead of being able to purchase a day at a time. The graphics are better and I think there is more content but I prefer those things that were lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nicely formatted news app July 11, 2013

NOTE: This is a review of the app and the news experience it provides. This isn't a commentary on the news content or the subscription price. Use your own judgement on the news content provided: That's a personal preference. It's up to you to decide whether it's too liberal or too conservative for you.

I have used a lot of different news apps on my Kindle Fire, and this is my second favorite so far. (Sadly, my favorite news app was discontinued, so this one is my next best choice.)

The first thing that struck me about this app is the easy-to-read home page. The home page uses a nice clear large typeface for the headlines and a smaller font for the summaries. To the right of most of the headlines is a large photo that spans half of the column. Between each headline is a good sized white margin. The sum effect of these design elements is a list of articles that is very easy on the eyes.

The top menu bar has a drop-down list of categories similar to the categories on the NYT webpage. Because this is a major news publication, the content in each of the categories is pretty extensive. And unlike some news apps that are just news aggregators, the articles are all original NYT content.

The settings are easy to access and provide some nice options. One option that I really like is the "Night Mode" viewing. Similar to the Kindle Fire's native book reading app, you can invert the text areas so that the text is white and the background is white. I use this mode when I read in bed or on an airplane. (TIP: If you fly a lot, use the Night Mode on the plane so that your screen won't glow as brightly and won't be so visible to the flight attendants.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Example July 21, 2013

This is et another example of "free" Kindle Apps that are only "free" for a brief time, after which one must pay astronomical prices to "keep" them. Bah. Humbug.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a tease. August 5, 2013

This is nothing more than an advertising promotion. Not worth the download time. You get to read 3 articles from such a large publication what a joke. Then you are offered a $20 a month subscription. Download Npr news app its much better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please bring back the .99/issue option August 2, 2013
Verified Purchase
I think I'm basically mirroring what someone else on here said: I used to buy the NY Times on my Kindle Fire on Sundays only. I found .99 to be a great bargain. Frankly, I don't have time to read it during the week. Please bring back the per issue option. I can't understand why a company would willingly turn away paying doesn't make good business sense! After my month is up, I will be uninstalling this app. It looks fine but I'm not interested in paying $20/mo for a paper I'll only read every Sunday.

2.0 out of 5 stars PREFERED THE OLD July 25, 2013

This free edition is not as complete as the 99 cent product. I would rather pay a little to have the more complete edition which could be down loaded and read later when a wi-fi connection may not be available.

I already have a paid subscription but this app won't link to it, so my access is limited. I won't use it, will just logon online to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars does not provide any news
I assume this has to do with changes by the nytimes. I now see titles but no text in the articles. Removed.
