Book Description

It only took one bullet. Austia's friend and student fell dead. And with a glimpse of a newspaper headline, the young and recently widowed Austia knows more about what happened than the police. From that fatal night, Austia’s secret outreach to the U.S. Muslim community—in the guise of English language classes—becomes a target. Local Muslim extremists set their sights on ending her ministry and even her life. And the women she ministers to will be next.
A thick web of deceit closes in around Austia, and her circle of friends becomes smaller by the day, even as she finally opens herself to the idea of falling in love again. But who can she trust? Facing a spiritual battle that proves more treacherous than it at first seemed, Austia’s convictions are tested to their limits and her heart becomes primed for breaking. She must ask herself: how much she will risk to stay true to her herself, her faith, and to the lives of the women she serves?

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating story filled with action and suspense May 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
The author shows a depth of knowledge about radical Islam, the clash of Muslim culture in American communities, and the risk to Christian outreach workers in this fiction novel. The backdrop of an `honor' killing of a young Muslim woman begins an engrossing chain of events that takes the reader into another culture, religion, and perspective that is both horrifying and illuminating.

This fast paced suspense story grabs the reader and takes them through the twist and turns of a race between the main character, Austria, and another convert, an undercover FBI agent, and a terrorist cell intent on killing Austria and initiating an attack on America. These cross-purposes quickly spiral into one of self-doubt and self-preservation. The story line keep readers captivated until the end because we come to care about the well developed main characters and their outcomes.

Nikki Arana's respectful and non-judgmental treatment of other cultures comes through in her writing, which makes for a quality story. She shows an accuracy of details that is evident of a person who has intimate knowledge of Muslim communities in America, their culture, language, and the challenges of Christian outreach.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE "NEXT" BOOK YOU SHOULD READ ... August 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
Every blue moon or so, you come across a novel that takes you by surprise, hits you between the eyes and changes your life for the better. Nikki Arana's The Next Target is the book that has recently done that for me.

As a historical romance writer, I make no bones about being a die-hard historical romance reader as well, seldom venturing into other genres unless something or someone compels me to do so. I had heard so many good things about Nikki Arana's work from many people, but especially my agent whom I highly respect and admire, that when I won Nikki's latest book The Next Target in a contest recently, I just knew I had to read it.

And oh my--I'm so glad I did! From the first page to the last, The Next Target consumed me with a gut-wrenching faith-under-fire tale that could have been ripped from today's headlines. A haunting and hard-hitting novel extracted from the annals of Ms. Arana's own real-life ministry among Muslim women, The Next Target not only riveted me page by page, but it challenged me to explore the depth of my own faith and just how far I'd go to defend and promote it. Somehow Nikki Arana manages to provoke this level of intense soul-searching in a manner that entertains as much as it teaches, captivating me with things I so dearly love in a novel--drama, emotion and, yes, a forbidden romance! Trust me, this is not just a book to pass the time and enjoy. No, this is a book that will change the way you look at your faith, and quite frankly, there isn't a higher compliment I can pay a Christian author.

5.0 out of 5 stars RIVETING...EYE OPENING...A GREAT READ! May 26, 2012
By Frances
Format:Paperback
Want an emotional roller-coaster ride? Read "The Next Target." It's a vividly written suspense novel in which Nikki Arana not only plays cat and mouse with her characters -- but you'll sometimes be surprised by who's the cat and who's the mouse. Filled with tension and "oh no!" moments, the book is skillfully crafted with twists and turns that kept me guessing with each page. Every time I thought I could see where the story was going, it headed into an entirely different direction...right up to the end.

I always feel it's a bonus when a piece of fiction is more than just entertainment...that teaches me something or makes me think. While reading "The Next Target," I found myself struggling with things like culture clash in our country, women's rights, and my own set of prejudices. Among other things, I learned about the terrible plight of women who, like the characters of Sabirah and Fatimah, are born into the "hopelessness of Islam." Thanks to the fact that Nikki Arana allows the light of Christ's love to shine through in her writing, I have a newfound heart for these women...and a renewed gratitude for the blessings in my own life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Suspense June 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Good...

The Next Target is a well written suspense that brought to mind Frank Peretti's Piercing the Darkness, minus the demons and angels. The author's use of dark and light imagery and the feeling that Hussein is able to know things without being told gave the distinct feeling that this was a story of spiritual warfare.

Wonderfully frustrating cases of "just missing" the one who could make everything work out and misunderstandings regarding a person's real intentions made me want to continue reading just to see if/when things would be cleared up. The author did a great job showing how what may seem like a bad thing was actually God making things work out the way they needed to.

The Not-so-good...

In general, prologues are not necessary and this one is no exception. It's beautifully written, but does nothing to move the story along.

Also, this fantastic story is marred by repetitive back story info dumps. It was almost as if the author didn't trust that the reader would either remember important details or would miss the point of a scene.

The Overall...

The Next Target by Nikki Arana is an inspiring suspense that keeps readers up all night wondering if it's true that Love Never Fails.
