I recently attended a group session moderated by Brent Henley, and his skill at guiding group conversation and his insight into people were both very impressive. When I saw that he had a book with the premise that "growing business is the same as giving business", I ordered the electronic version, as I didn't even want to wait on shipping. I was not disappointed.

Just Like Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is a compilation of many things that "just make sense", so too does this book put into writing principles that make good sense when dealing with "the people side of business." Becoming part of a Nexus where you can try to help others is a great idea, and Brent offers specific, practical advice on how to achieve maximum results (e.g., Nexus size, meeting frequency, etc.)

I was tickled when he mentioned service clubs, because I have been in Kiwanis for 10 years. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. (OK, that was my commercial for Kiwanis) It is definitely NOT a business networking organization/grow your business kind of club. But through organizations like Kiwanis, where we give of ourselves alongside of those with similar interests, we get more exposure of who we are and what we do. And those who know us are happy to promote us.

This is a great insight into why self-promotion/networking is broken, and a new way to look at letting others help you.

So here is the deal about this book. When I first got it I was a little surprised about the size of the book, it's rather light. However, after reading the book, I realized that the author has included only material relevant to making a nexus work. Any additional information would have only been present to "fill" space. And the author tells you, towards the end, that is a no b.s. kind of guy.
I read the book on day 1, and then I read it again on day 2, this time with paper and pencil handy. By the end of day 2, I had the beginnings of my nexus. By the end of day 3 my nexus was firm, my plan was written down, and I had begun making calls to set up coffees and lunches. It was that easy!!!!
Bottom line, it's a great book, common sense but with an action plan. And, if you implement the ideas, even try them on a small scale first; I am sure you will have positive results.

In Brent Henley's first book, he challenges readers to venture into what many will view as a unique approach that to get business, you should give within the "networking" construct. In the fast-paced, instant gratification world in which we live and work, businesses generally operate on a get-what-you-can quickly basis, whether it is a referral or a sale. However, Henley proposes an atypical outward flow of shared knowledge and referrals in a focused, value-added manner that assists clients in finding solutions to challenges and helps them reach their goals. Consequently, reciprocity occurs, and results in win-win situations. This is an easy read that will soon become a quick reference.

Brent Henley says if you do not have enough business it is because you have not given enough business away! He is absolutely right! He also says Networking is broken because far too many people show up at networking events to "take" instead of coming to make new friends and to meet people they can be in service of. Look around you, the successful people you know are always doing things for other people with no expectation in return. People that are struggling too frequently are self focused and do very little for others. In this tough economy, this is the simplest, best handbook for growth. It is a fast read, intuitive and you know the advice you are getting is right!
