Review

For all its flaws and idiosyncracies, The Night Land is utterly unsurpassed, unique, astounding. A mutant vision like nothing else there has ever been.—China Mieville

One of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written.—H.P. Lovecraft,

[Good science fiction stories] give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience... W.H. Hodgson's The Night Land [makes the grade] in eminence from the unforgettable sombre splendour of the images it presents...— C.S. Lewis

I love WHH. He was the gateway to Lovecraft for me and I still love "The Boats of the Glen Carrig," but I have tried and tried to get through "The Night Land." The book has an incredibly unique premise and was way ahead of it's time, considering it was published more than one hundred years ago. The problem is not in the pseudo archaic English WHH used for the book. That isn't very difficult, although I must admit it is somewhat abrasive. The problem lies with editing and pacing. The first volume works well, with the narrator describing his quest. Volume Two suffers from a continual babble about his lady love and how he physically makes her submissive to him, which I find offensive, even though I know that things were different during the time that WHH wrote the book. "I kissed her, she kissed me. We held hands" It all get to a point where one wants to scream. Almost entire discs are spent with this nonsense and you just want them to get on with getting home. If the book had been edited down by half it would be fine. He seems to have tried to write a Chivalric Romance as a science fiction novel and quite frankly, it fails. I give it three stars because of the strength of WHH's imagination and his futuristic ideas, but the book is horribly written and I cannot get past that. I am finishing it though, which I feel proud of myself for, since I've been trying since 1971.

Keep in mind this book was written over 100 years ago in 1912 and to be frank, is really difficult to read. It has some nice concepts but it drags along slowly. You can read the entire book on line (no ebook)at Google Books. At least starting to read it there will help you determine whether or not it is a book you wish to purchase from Amazon (or whomever).
