Book Description

Veronica Kelly came to Africa to start her life over. Still reeling from her divorce, she is grateful when a handsome stranger invites her to join a tour to visit gorillas in Uganda's wild Impenetrable Forest. A trip that goes desperately wrong when their group is captured by brutal gunmen.

Then one tourist is executed.

And then another.

This is no random kidnapping: their abduction is only the first move in a deadly strategic game. A game in which Veronica's ex-husband is somehow involved.

Now she must embark on a wild journey across Africa, to unveil a malignant conspiracy before it consumes entire nations - and thousands of lives...

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Evans's plots positively teem with well-drawn characters and terse, well-controlled dialogue. There are plenty of twists and turns and the non-stop action is guaranteed to leave readers breathless." -- Lancashire Evening Post

"Suspense aplenty keeps the pages turning." -- Gold Coast Bulletin (Australia)

"A gripping and terrifying read." -- The York Press

"Full of twists and turns, this high-concept, high-adrenalin thriller bests most of what has been produced out of Hollywood in recent years. A must read for action junkies everywhere." -- South Coast Register (Australia)

"A vivid eye for detail ... a tale that yomps through the bush and across countries." -- Huddersfield Examiner

"The novel begins at speed, with a group of British, American and Canadian tourists trekking through the Ugandan jungle on a gorilla-spotting tour. By the time the page numbers reach double figures, the guards are dead and the tourists' apparently Congolese captors are marching them towards the Uganda-Congo border, where the plan is to hold them to ransom. But almost every aspect of the plot is more complicated than it seems ..." -- Sydney Morning Herald

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of suspense - I couldn't put it down June 20, 2012
By Mindy

This was a fantastic book. You really get a feel for the plight of the characters and what daily life is like for many African citizens. In fact, there is enough historical accuracy to almost make you think the book could have been based on a true story. It's graphic, but not in a senseless gore, horror movie kind of way. But I wouldn't recommend it for someone with a delicate conscience for that sort of thing. This book is full of action and suspense, and it really keeps you wanting more. I think it would make a fantastic movie -- in fact, I'd be surprised if someone hadn't already snatched up the movie rights! There are so many twists and turns, surprises and suspense-filled moments.

If I had anything negative to say about this book, it's that twice the author called the character "Jacob" by a different name: once "Erik" and once "Erid". And I wish it could have ended differently for a couple characters (I can't say more than that without giving too much away). But overall, I highly recommend this book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed November 27, 2012
By sopeach
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book seemed like a good adventure story and it was a free download. It actually was pretty good to begin with, but becomes too violent for my taste. If you don't mind blood, gore, and lots of profanity you might like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Exciting June 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book begins with the main character, Veronica Kelly, on a day trip with a few casual friends and some strangers that leads to the dramatic opening that lasts the first few chapters that will have you on the edge of your seat. The story is based in Africa, and has her story take her all over the map with detailed accounts of the poverty and misery in abundance as she tries to think her way past the people trying to kill her. She is still trying to recover from her messy divorce when she has to determine if her ex-husband has anything to do with her recent mystery and danger.

The book will keep you guessing right up to the end, trying to figure out to is the bad guy and who are the innocent victims. Will she figure out who is involved in time to save her friends, and protect thousands of people? Does she have the mental and physical strength to overcome her obstacles and remain alive?

I recommend this story as a surprise hit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and powerful September 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book doesn't pull its punches. I almost stopped reading because of the bleak nastiness of the earlier scenes where the heroes have been kidnapped. It's quite powerful. Later it gets a bit easier to read as they are free and have more choices.

The writing packs a real punch, and the storytelling is quite skillful. It seems like the proofreading was much more meticulous in the first third. By the last third the silly typos get rather thick, which was pretty annoying. But overall it's suspenseful and visceral.

3.0 out of 5 stars over the top July 18, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Entertaining, but somewhat disappointing. The plot was excellent. Lots of action and surprising twists. The lady protagonist should have been superwoman to handle all the adversities she faced at the very limit of her endurance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Read on Kindle October 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Knight of knives is a very exciting and involved book. It leaves you somewhat exhausted because the circumstances are so exciting. The main character goes from one escapade to another. I am sorry I have finished it and and now hope I can find one that is as good on my Kindle.

Format:Kindle Edition
Totally kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Definitely an intense but also exciting, captivating read. It was also so interesting! This book kind of opened the door for me to become more interested in reading (fiction and non-fiction) books about Africa.

More About the Author

I always wanted to be a writer. I travel a lot - more than 70 countries across six continents, to date. My novel DARK PLACES won Canada's Arthur Ellis Award, and has been translated into Dutch, German, and Japanese; my recent Vertigo Crime graphic novel THE EXECUTOR was nominated for a Spinetingler Award, appeared on several best-of-the-year-lists, and has been translated into Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. My most recent book, and I think my favorite, is my "children's book for grown-ups" BEASTS OF NEW YORK. I'm not so secretly planning to write a sequel or two. I write novels, scripts, magazine journalism, a weekly column for the irreverent tech site TechCrunch, and software. It is fair to say that I am easily bored.
