After having purchased and read Mr Cummins translation of the Shoninki titled "True Path of the Ninja", I eagerly anticipated its companion "True Ninja Traditions".

The book itself in my understanding needed translation both from archaic Japanese to modern Japanese and then translated yet again into English. Not being able to read and understand either Japanese text, Mr Cummins version of the Ninpiden (which this manual is transcribed from) fit my purposes very nicely. All of the information was translated as closely to the original as possible and the illustrations were very acurately reproduced.

The translation provides an unblinking look into the way Ninpo was done in the days of famous Ninjutsu families such as the Hanzo family and others, and provides great insight into the way things were done in times of old. It also provides tactics that still ring true to this very day.

While Im sure the translation process was quite tedious Mr Cummins and his translator Ms Miname do their utmost to relay the feeling that the original authors from the 16th century sought to illustrate. Any word or phrase that would normally be difficult to illustrate in the translation from Japanese to English is well footnoted and made easy for the common or novice reader to understand.

As a student of Military History and Tactics I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in the aspects of clandestine warfare and espionage.

I found this to be a more entertaining read than either of the two translations of the Shoninki I've read. There a lot of diagrams and discussions of Ninja Tools (Ningu),Ninja Strategy (Boryaku) and other information I haven't seen in other places. This is a bit less esoteric than the Shoninki and the Ninja Poems and Shinobi Scrolls are, for me, as interesting as the Ninpiden itself. I found some of the footnoting and referencing a little lack lustre, but this did not greatly diminish my enjoyment of the book. If you want an insight into historical ninjutsu, this is a good place to start.
