Editorial Reviews

Pantley, author of the child-rearing classic, The No-Cry Sleep Solution, takes on the issue of how to toilet-train your child with minimal stress. She guides parents through every step of the process, beginning with a thorough "Readiness Quiz." She provides countless creative strategies for dealing with the typical reluctance children experience as they graduate from diapers. Her guidance will help parents potty-train gently and effectively, keeping their frustration in check.
Any parent who thinks their child is ready to be potty-trained should make this book their first stop.

From the Author

Potty training your child shouldn't require an instruction manual the size of a telephone book, nor should it require a visit to your pediatrician. It certainly shouldn't involve a private consultant's assistance! Yet you may be like many other parents who get the idea that this is a complicated, difficult undertaking, and can't possibly be done with ease. I have good news. As a parent educator and four time veteran of the toilet training process, I know that potty training can be simple, pleasant, and yes, even fun. I've written this guide so that you can sail through the potty training process easily and joyfully with your child.

I really liked the take of this calm, let the child lead, be calm, the child will not be ready until he/she is ready, be calm. Did I mention that a ton of this book is based on you? Like I said I did like the book, it was easy to read and made sense...EXCEPT if you have a totally stubborn child who absolutely refuses to go on the potty. There is no practicals on how to deal with problems like this. What do you do when your child is ready, but can not be bothered to stop playing? I think the book can be improved greatly by some practical answers other than maybe your child is not ready.

The No-Cry Potty Training Solution book is just amazing!! If you are a parent who is starting the process of potty training, OR going to be starting the potty training in the future, you will NEED this book. I have read a couple of books about potty training, that had some ideas here and there, but this book has ALL of the ideas and assistance in one very easy to understand book.

During my potty training of my daughter, I had some stress and no patience. After reading this book I realized that I needed to control my patience, and once I did and had the correct tools it did not take long at all for my daughter to succeed, and with few accidents.

Elizabeth Pantley gives you creative ideas to help along the potty process, my favorite (and my daughters) was a box of wrapped little presents (i.e., play dough, crayons, coloring book) and whenever my daughter used the potty she got a gift. She loved that positive reinforcement!!

Another great thing in the book is a quiz about Potty Readiness that you can take from the beginning to see where your child is on the potty training.

From a mother of 2 with 1 successful potty trained daughter, and a son who will be starting within the next year, I highly recommend The No-Cry Potty Solution book from Elizabeth Pantley to all the moms and dads who are getting ready to start the potty training and even for the expecting moms to have something GOOD to look forward too.

This book was mostly fluff. All of the information in 168 pages could have been contained in a short pamphlet or booklet, at the least. She explains her basic premises in the first few pages, then goes on to explain more about them in the rest of the book. During the explanation, she repeats exactly what she had already said, then gives a bit more detail.

The book is based on her experience as a parent. She gives a couple of feel-good options, then just explains that every child is different and you should do what works for you. This book does not offer a plan, nor does is give many facts. It is completely based on the opinion of the author and does not include any research to back up her opinions. I found myself continually asking "why?" to things that she says, and not receiving an answer.

Most of what was in this book is easily found on the internet with a simple Google search. The one thing that I will take from the book is a reminder that potty-training takes time, like everything else children learn.

One thing I liked about the book was that it had pictures of children using the potty that I could show my daughter. I wish, though, that she had not included the picture of the boy unraveling all the toilet paper, or the girl with the potty seat on her head!

I've had years of experience working with young children and seeing the frustration they and their parents went though during the potty-training phase. When it was time to potty train my son, I was understandably nervous. Elizabeth Pantley's book simplified things in such a way that I knew right away what methods I felt would work for my son and for me and he was potty-trained within a week by 2.5 years old. There was absolutely no fuss, no crying, no stress and he enjoyed it as much as I did. I have encouraged all my friends to use the book and thus far, none of the 30 families that followed her methods had any difficulty with the process. I believe that all children will eventually be potty-trained but the book ensures that it will be a smooth and easy transition from diapers to underwear! I feel that anyone who has difficulty taking the information and applying it to their situation is just looking for an easy fix and these methods do take time and effort but so does all good parenting! I rarely review books and will only do so if I feel that it is a true treasure that needs to be shared with other parents and this book is one of them! I always give a copy to friends when their child is close to the age of showing readiness. Elizabeth Pantley is a genius in that she takes her personal experience and years of research as well as the personal experiences of others and puts it all together in a hands-on, user-friendly book that anyone can use and be successful with as long as they are willing to apply the information! This book, along with her other books, are a requirement for every home library!

The No-Cry Potty Training Solution is a gentle guide to help you transition your child from diapers to the toilet. It takes a gentle and relaxed approach to potty training that is based on waiting until your child is ready for potty training. If you are looking for either an elimination communication solution or an intensive 1-3 day potty training solution, this is not the book for you.

There are a total of 9 chapters in this book with a set of quick guide summaries in the beginning. The first chapter sets the philosophical tone of the book. It tries to make you understand your child's perspective and show you how difficult and complex potty training is. It claims that potty training is rarely achieved in that short amount of time and that it typically takes months.

The second chapter has a fairly comprehensive quiz on readiness that spans several pages. Even if your child is not yet ready for potty training, there is still quite a lot that you can do beforehand to get your child prepared, and this is discussed in Chapter 3.

The meat of the book is in Chapter 5, and that chapter is accurately entitled "A Menu of Potty Training Ideas". Indeed, the author gives us many ideas about potty training. Too many in my opinion. When there are so many options and every way can be the right way, I am left lost as to what I should do.

The remainder of the book discusses bed wetting and common problems & questions with the last chapter on bathroom safety.

One particularly useful insight presented in this book is that it doesn't matter when you start potty training, the end time is usually the same.
