I found the light easy to activate with a quick flick of the wrist, but my daughter had a heck of a time. The next day, the light wouldn't activate at all -- I was able to determine its functionality (at least our particular wand) depended on the battery door being almost fully tightened, but not fully tightened. I folded a tiny square of aluminum foil and inserted it...

I can't even tell you how happy my granddaughter is with this wand. There are a couple of things to know about the wand. For one thing, the brightness of the illuminated tip changes by pushing the button. At first we didn't know that and thought it was not working as well as the other wand we purchased at the same time. I suppose there is some 'wizard' reason for the various brightness levels :).

When you wave the wand with a bit of force, the light comes on (and goes off with another such move), but since it also comes on when tapped by mistake and jiggled while riding in the car and all manner of other things, my granddaughter elected to remove the batteries for travel. There is a little key included in the box that turns the plastic base cap to reveal the battery compartment, and at six she is very capable of loading or unloading the batteries as she sees fit. Assuming the little key is lost however, a small screwdriver would work just as well.

Since the box in which the wand comes looks rather like those in the wand store in the movie, it is also treasured. The wand is carefully put away when not in play and carried in its box with great reverence.

The wand is made of a good-looking matte plastic material that is sculpted to look like it's covered with ivy. Both grandchildren got their wands together at a local book store and I was able to save a bit with some coupons so the price wasn't so high, but even if I hadn't been so lucky, this gift would have been worth it as they've played with them almost constantly since. They spark the imagination more than anything I've seen in some time. Highly recommended for Harry Potter fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Useful, yet expensive., December 2, 2008

The wand is very bright in a dim room and fun to wave around. It is usually sensitive to motion which can be good or bad. However sometimes I find myself slamming the wand against a wall to get it to turn on. It takes AA batteries and doesn't need a replacement bulb. There is also a button which controls the brightness of the wand light. My only complaint about this product is that after half a year or so of owning it the light starts to flicker annoyingly. But anyway it is a great product and a helpful flashlight for Harry Potter Fans.

I gave this a 5 star for educational value because my 2 daughters have been so creative and imaginative with their little wands.. and have actually tried to learn CHEMISTRY! LOL.. thinking they could pretend better if they knew what they were talking about when they pretended to mix potions. LOL .. Besides it has encouraged them to read and research all kinds of things.. They love the flick of the wand control that turns the light on the end off and on.. they also love the button on the handle that acts as a dimmer or a brightener.. I give this a 10! Now they want capes, and hats, LOL... they ahve wish lists a mile long.. LOL.. This wand is well made and works as it says and comes in a nice sturdy case that you can keep it in.

Purchased this for my 9 year old niece for her birthday. She's just finished reading her third Harry Potter book. This was an awesome gift...beautifully boxed and well worth what I paid! She absolutely loved this and I absolutely loved watching her play with it. This is a great gift for any Harry Potter fan. The box is beautiful, very well made and makes it something that will last a very long time!

I really like this although I am 17, i had some trouble making the light go on and off when I waved it but its fun and good for a laugh, the light can also be useful. my only grudge is that it is a bit pricy for what it is, but all in all its a fun buy.

I found the light easy to activate with a quick flick of the wrist, but my daughter had a heck of a time. The next day, the light wouldn't activate at all -- I was able to determine its functionality (at least our particular wand) depended on the battery door being almost fully tightened, but not fully tightened. I folded a tiny square of aluminum foil and inserted it between the last battery and the metal spring that holds the battery in with pressure. Now the light works consistently and is much easier for my daughter to activate. I'd be happier if there was simply an on/off switch. There is instead a button that slowly increases or lessens the brightness after the light has been activated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, with minor flaws., March 4, 2011

This is a great wand! When I took it out of it's box the first this I realized was it was much thicker than the real wand, to hold the batteries, and was made of plastic.
At the bottom of the wand there is a little slot, were you stick a key and that is how you insert the batteries. Of of the leaf designs is popped out, and is a button that so make the light on the wand increase and decrease with a touch. To get the light on you simply wave the wand. To turn it of you wave it again. It is incredibly fun to play with, and could be used as a flashlight. But, the light is EXTREMELY sensitive to any movement and can turn on. The detail is also superb, it may not be the best replica, but it's definitely a fun toy!

5.0 out of 5 stars about the wand, December 11, 2007
A Kid's Review
I just got Hermione Granger's illuminating wand and it is the most awesome wand I ever had!!! This wand belongs to Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series. This is how you can use this awesome wand:wave it one time, it flashes and if you wave it again, it stops flashing. So you can be just like a real wizard! So order yours today. Young Harry Potter fans, if your parents say to save your money then do it so you can order your wand somewhere in this month.

Love this wand, but the list price is $30. Two days ago it was $35 on amazon, and now it is $46. Competitors are offering the correct list price.
