Book Description

The aim of The Node Beginner Book is to get you started with developing applications for Node.js, teaching you everything you need to know about advanced JavaScript along the way.

Praise for The Node Beginner Book:

"This is one of the best tutorials I've read. As a former Java coder, I've always found JavaScript to be a black art, but you have really simplified things with this tutorial."

"I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for writing such an excellent introduction to node. Your book's explanation is fantastic!"

"This is one of the few beginner articles I made it all the way through because of how well it's written."

This 'book' is not really a book but a tutorial on how to make a very limited web server using Node. For how to get up and running he just gives you a link to the node website and says 'come back when you're up and running'.

It seems like the author just made notes about his own experiments with Node and then cleaned it up.

The tutorial is well written and there is good information in it. You do not even have to know javascript to follow the examples and succeed. I did everything up until the last part with Formidable.

I would give this 5 stars if it cost $1, but it really isn't worth $8.99 for a 50 page tutorial on how to write one tiny Node server.

In summary, it is a great tutorial for making a little tiny webserver using node with no prior javascript or node knowledge, and if you don't mind spending $9 for around 50 pages, then I recommend it. Although the content is terrific, the amount of material is laughably small. Calling this a 'book' is misleading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great Guide February 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is definitely one of the nicest experiences I've had with learning a new framework. Usually, I'm forced to sort through documentation for something I still don't really GET. The author made a valiant effort to explain all of node.js's core features in a very approachable (and humble) manner. I am extremely impressed. I definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to get into node.js.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for Node.js October 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a good starting point for node.js. it doesn't get into too much detail but give you an overview for the architecture and some examples on how to develop using various common platform in the Node. be aware that all the example assume that you have basic understing of Javascript syntax.

This is a great book to get started with Node.JS. Although I use Node.JS on a Raspberry Pi I found the code examples presented worked well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, but to the point October 21, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the way the author describes the evolution of a mini request handling framework based on bare node.js. Of course, you could argue that for that a node user can (and probably should) make use of a framework like expressjs, but understanding the basic concepts behind frameworks like this will make you appreciate them even more.

Books don't have to be 200 pages to be worth every penny. Then again, if you're not a node beginner, don't buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good April 30, 2012
By Art
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a good introduction to using Node.js - specifically to setup a local web server. It doesn't offer a deep dive into code or any specific explanations to the platform itself, but if you're just trying to get your tastebuds wet it's a good place to start. And for 10 bucks, it's an easy purchase to justify.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conversational and thorough October 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
My review is based on the web tutorial series.

Manuel does an awesome job at describing the logic of event-driven programming with Node. The code is quite clean of errors -- I can't recall any that stumped me from running the samples. The tutorials are based on writing a simple app that takes you through the nitty gritty of the server, event-driven callbacks and POST/GET.

Although some programming knowledge is assumed, he writes everything in such a smooth, conversational tone that a beginner would get a ton out of this just for the logic. Highly recommended if you're interested in Node and need a quick dive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too short
Way to short to that price. The text it self is good but I felt cheated when I had to pay the same for 67 pages that I've paid previously for several hundreds
