I loved the Non-Campaign. It had so many interesting things in it. Just last year I had spent time in Iowa at the Straw Poll and seeing how different campaigns or Non-Campaigns worked that was so similar to what Chris writes about.

I don't want to give spoiler, but the end is shocking and then the epilogue shocking again.

When Chris continues this series I will buy and read.

In a plot that would seem predictable, Truscott manages to deliver surprises and keep the reader hooked. Even better, the characters' individual struggles and doubts are truly engaging, and he lets us know just enough of their stories to keep us wanting more. This is the politics game: the absurd, the frustrating, the worst and the best of human nature. Loved the whole series.

"Is there something kind of evil about this?" Evan said. "I mean this celebration of wealth and power--" -The Non-Campaign (The Perpetual Campaign; Book 4)

Another gripping and fast-reading instalment in Truscott's ever-evolving Perpetual Campaign series. Truscott's strength here is the dialogue, which has matured over the series and is both compelling and convincing.

For me, the politics remains a backdrop, the real story the people. Especially Governor Clarissa Jennings, who is stronger than ever, yet just as vulnerable as the young idealist she once was.

I enjoyed the surprise ending. No spoiler alert, but in hindsight, it's what the story had been building towards.

Chris Truscott delivers: every time. I have read this complete series and have become familiar with the widely disparate characters that grace the pages of Truscott's well-conceived political tome. I have said from the beginning that Truscott understands and explores both sides of the aisle as his characters manuever through their perpetual dance. This volume spends more time on the liberal side of the fence, but in saying that, hard core liberals will not embrace his primary character because she doesn't go "far enough" for their tastes. She is a practical liberal, preferring a budget surplus to yet another teat to suck on. Her stance is admirable and acceptable to both sides of the aisle.

Now, as the Non-Campaigh ends and Clarissa Jennings finds herself inside the beltway, all bets are off. A whole new set of rules apply. There are NO rules, and may the best (wo)man win. I love Truscott's style of writing. He credits his wife with being the better writer in the family. Whether true or not, Mr. Truscott ranks among those writers whom I admire the most. May he continue to enthrall us.
