Book Description

Why is Chanukah celebrated close to Christmas one year, but closer to Thanksgiving another year? Why do Jews exchange presents on Chanukah? What is Purim, and why do Jews dress in costumes on that day? And what are the Four Questions anyway?

After reading The Non-Jew’s Guide to Jewish Holidays, you will know the answers to these questions and more. This book will explain why the Jewish holidays are observed and the rituals that are followed during the observances. You will also learn why the holidays are celebrated on different days on the secular calendar each year.

Written by best-selling author Elizabeth Reynolds, this book is the one to buy if you want to learn more. It covers the Jewish holidays in chronological order beginning with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.

The holidays included in this book are:

Shabbat (Sabbath)

Days of Awe - Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles)

Shemini Atzerit (Eighth Day of Assembly) and Simchat Torah (Joy of the Torah)

Chanukah, Chanuka or Hanukkah (Festival of Lights)

Tu B’Shevat (New Year for Trees)

Purim (Feast of Lots)

Pesach (Passover)

Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day)

Shavuot (Festival of Weeks)

Tisha B’Av (The Fast of Av)

About the Author

Hi! I’m Elizabeth Reynolds, author of the best-selling book, The Non-Jew’s Guide to Jewish Ceremonies. I’ve now written this new book, The Non-Jew’s Guide to Jewish Holidays, at the request of some of my non-Jewish friends who wanted to learn more about those holidays. Whether you’re a non-Jew looking to learn more about the Jewish religion or a Jew who, like me, grew up in a non-religious Jewish home, I think you’ll find my “guidebooks” packed with information about the Jewish culture. I’ve been married to a non-Jew for 18 years, so I’ve had abundant experience in explaining Jewish holidays and customs to my husband’s family. I hope you will find my books enriching and enjoyable. I’m also the author of Are You Ready to Be a Substitute Teacher? Practical Tips for Keeping Your Sanity. Working as a substitute has been fun, rewarding, annoying and wearisome - sometimes all in the same day. In this book, I share my experiences so you’ll be able to find more of the positives and fewer of the negatives that can accompany the job of substitute teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Jewish Holidays April 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an excellent book on the Jewish holidays for both Jews and non-Jews. Elizabeth first explains the various branches of Judaism and the Jewish calender. Then she discusses each Jewish holiday, the history and story of the holiday and how it's observed today.

I was familiar with some of the holidays, like Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Chanakah and Passover. But Elizabeth provides some new details and background for those holidays.

She also discusses many other Jewish holidays like Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), Shemini Atzerit (Eighth Day of Assembly), Simchat Torah (Joy of the Torah), Purim (Feast of Lots), Yom Hashoah (holocaust Remembrance Day) and many more.

It's a well-written book and very informative. There are also a lot of links in the back for each holiday if you want to read more.

I'd highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Jewish Holidays! April 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was so delighted to see that Elizabeth Reynolds wrote this book! I have her book on Jewish ceremonies and couldn't wait to read this one. It did not disappoint! The Non-Jew's Guide to Jewish Holidays is a very detailed book about the Jewish calendar, the Sabbath, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Chanukah. It also explains holidays that I knew very little about such as Tu B'Shevat, Purim, and Yom Hashoah. I learned so much by reading this book!

The Non-Jew's Guide to Jewish Holidays is an interesting read and I know that anyone who wants to learn about and understand more about these holidays will really enjoy this book.

I highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and interesting guide to Jewish Holidays September 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't really have any Jewish friends but do have Jewish business associates and it will be nice now to have at least some idea of what the holidays mean that they celebrate.

This book is very easy to read and understand and has lots of good background information as well as common current practices. Basically, it is a wealth of information and I am glad to now have a better understanding of different holidays and words I have heard in the past.

It would be nice to have basic guides like this for other religions as well.

This author has definitely filled a need by writing this guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-Jews Guide to Jewish Holidays is a delight to read. September 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of my best buddy is a Jewish gentleman in England. I've always wanted to know more about Jewish customs and holidays but could not find a book that is just right until I found Elizabeth's book.

It is very well written and provides just enough details to help one understand the various Jewish holidays and customs. I particularly like the way she explains why the holidays are important, and why the Jews celebrate them the way they do.

Well done! I'm off to wish my friend "L'Shanah Tovah" in the UK.

More About the Author

Hi! I'm Elizabeth Reynolds, author of the best-selling book, The Non-Jew's Guide to Jewish Ceremonies. I wrote that book for all the people out there who are like my friends and stay away from Jewish events out of fear of doing the wrong thing. It's really not hard once you know what to do. So I took it upon myself to tell you.

I've also written a book, The Non-Jew's Guide to Jewish Holidays, at the request of those same friends who wanted to learn more about the Jewish holidays and thought there might be others like them who would also like to learn more.

Whether you're a non-Jew looking to learn more about the Jewish religion or a Jew who, like me, grew up in a non-religious Jewish home, I think you'll find my "guidebooks" packed with information about the Jewish culture.

I've been married to a non-Jew for 19 years, so I've had abundant experience in explaining Jewish holidays and customs to my husband's family. I hope you will find my books enriching and enjoyable.

I'm also the author of the best-selling book, Are You Ready to Be a Substitute Teacher? Practical Tips for Keeping Your Sanity. Working as a substitute has been fun, rewarding, annoying and wearisome - sometimes all in the same day. In this book, I share my experiences so you'll be able to find more of the positives and fewer of the negatives that can accompany the job of substitute teacher.
